Warehouses and Distribution Centers-

MODULE 1 CASE – Warehouses and Distribution Centers

Ask, “What’s the difference between a warehouse and distribution center?” and you’ll get different answers. Move on to the array of technology available to automate and track materials in this part of the supply chain and beyond, which is evolving at a rapid pace. Experts point to cost savings through effective inventory management and innovative technology to maintain a competitive edge which have been embraced by leaders in the field.

We covered the labor force during this week’s Discussion and location decisions in SLP 1. Let us move on to what is going on inside warehouse/distribution centers and the important functions they play in the supply chain.

Case Assignment

Begin with the background readings to provide a foundation, and then research at least three diverse technologies that are being used in warehouses/distribution centers that help manage and track inventory and product within the facility, including those that are employed down the supply chain.

  • Discuss the three technologies, and then add an overview of initial costs and cost savings, if applicable. Include information on how these technologies affect human workers with regard to job displacement, safety, etc. Finally, discuss the software that supports functions within the facility for each new tech item.
  • The discussion for each technology should be 1 page in length.

Resources should be no more than three years old for this Case because the industry is changing rapidly and the goal is to remain relevant throughout your career.

The paper should be written in the third person; this means words like “I,” “we,” and “you” are not appropriate. For more information, see Differences Between First and Third Person. The excessive use of quotes or unoriginal content will directly impact performance since it suggests lack of comprehension and indicates that a student may not have mastered the concepts.

You are strongly encouraged to make your initial post by the middle of each week so that you have plenty of time to respond to your classmates.

Development of Self Discussion

Development of Self

In this discussion, you will begin to construct a personal identity profile:

  • First, summarize findings from the Internet research in the study of this unit (the context of your birth).
  • Next, identify your birth characteristics (gender, race, ethnicity, ability, status, sexual orientation, nationality, et cetera).
  • Finally, incorporate the following sections from Chapter 1 of your Culture and Identity text—“Development of the Self in Context”, “Societal Influences on Development”, and “Oppression” (pages 6 and 7) into an analysis of the accuracy of fit between your birth characteristics and your birth context.

Once you have completed the work above, answer the following questions:

  • Did you find favorable, unfavorable, neutral, or absent images of your birth characteristics in the media (your gender, race, ethnicity, ability status, et cetera)?
  • How does your identity align with the Thomas and Schwarzbaum discussion of oppression?

Response Guidelines

Respond to the posts of at least two learners. Comment on differences and similarities noted in the context of birth and analysis of goodness of fit between birth characteristics and birth context.

Learning Components

This activity will help you achieve the following learning components:

  • Explore the historical or cultural and social factors that impact the development of personal identity.
  • Assess one’s ethnic identity.

Individual Project unit 4

  4-6 pages (body)

Shannon Albright has an accounting degree from a U.S. accredited university. She also became certified as a CPA (certified public accountant). Upon graduation, she was offered and accepted an entry-level accounting position at a firm in Atlanta, GA. She has been gainfully employed with this firm for the last 5 years. Recently she interviewed with your firm, which is located in Boston, MA. You, working for the human resources department, want to hire Shannon for your organization’s financial accountant position.

You know Shannon is a strong candidate, and you want to develop a competitive offer that will attract Shannon yet still fit within the company’s budget and compensation structure (i.e., considering both internal and external equity).

With this in mind, you are asked to prepare the offer for Shannon. The following will be included in this package and should be specific to Shannon and this situation:

  • Compensation package: What pay rate will you offer (using salary survey research as support)? What else may be included in the compensation package?
  • Incentive plan: What performance-based incentives does this offer include?
  • Benefits plan: What specific benefit plans does this offer include?

It is important to provide the necessary supporting details to explain the incentives and benefits being offered. The more details you provide, the better educated Shannon will be to make her decision to accept.

Along with these packages, you will include a 1-page cover letter addressed to your supervisor that outlines what you propose to offer.

  • This cover letter should explain and justify the compensation package, incentive plan, and benefits plan.
  • Make sure to discuss job location and experience level
  • Your detailed plans will then follow that cover page.

Using the Internet and library, locate all necessary information for constructing these 3 packages. This is a research assignment so be sure to include and cite your research within the paper using APA style.

Training Needs Analysis

Training Needs Analysis

Chapter 3 of the textbook describes the analysis stage of ADDIE. In this step, a training needs analysis is required. Based on the training needs analysis, describe a training course that could be used for your current job position. How will the training address the needs of the employees?

Use this week’s lecture as a basis for your post. Reference and cite the textbook in your original post. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts.

Outsourcing Decisions

Companies decide to outsource to other entities that can accomplish a job function for a comparable cost, optimize operations, and allow for more resources to be deployed in areas where the company specializes. Outsourcing can mean departments or functions are handled by another company. It is important to ensure a seamless transition for all chain members

Case Assignment

  • Begin with the background readings which provide a foundation in industry outsourcing trends and practices. Research what functions are often outsourced in logistics/supply chain and why.
This portion of the paper will be 1 page in length.
  • Research the pros and cons of outsourcing in logistics (at least three pros and three cons must be discussed).
This portion of the paper will be 1 page in length.
  • Research two examples of logistics/supply chain companies that outsourced and had different results. (Use examples that are not from this week’s readings)
This portion of the paper will be 1 page in length.

Resources should be no more than three years old for this Case Assignment because the industry is changing rapidly, and the goal is to remain relevant throughout your career.

Homework Question

Review the case study Maruti Suzuki India: Defending Market Leadership in the A-Segment and identify a problem that can be addressed by a research report. Draft a preliminary description of the problem and a research question based on the problem identified. For this journal and the first final project milestone, you will not need to reference the data sets provided, but you may want to review the data briefly to help inform the development of your research question.

Note: You will notice that there are both qualitative and quantitative data sets accompanying the case study. While both can be used to address a business problem, you will be using quantitative data sets for the purpose of the final project in this course.
