Soft Skills

The human resource manager must be skilled and knowledgeable and have the ability to respond appropriately to many different situations. While it is important to be tactile in hard skills, it is also important to be well versed in soft skills. Often, soft skills are mistaken as weak or secondary to the important strategic behaviors required of a manager in a successful organization; however, soft skills have a specific role in engaging and empowering employees.

Define the various soft skills that would facilitate the empowerment and engagement of the employee. Think back to the components of the job analysis and job description, and consider how to use soft skills to put the contents into actions and behaviors. How do soft skills move the employee to a place of value and ownership? Will the same soft skill behaviors work for all position types?

Recruiting, Selection, and Training

Write a four to five (4-5) page paper in which you:

  1. Briefly describe the company you researched.
  2. Evaluate the effectiveness of the company’s recruiting efforts and suggest two (2) recommendations for improvement.
  3. Analyze the selection process of the company you researched and recommend two (2) areas for improvement.
  4. Assess the effectiveness of human resource planning and performance management systems in general.

You are to select and interview a professional in your designated or related career field (faculty in your program of study may be a good place to start). You are to complete the interview in person or by phone. At the beginning of the interview, you will explain the P.R.I.C.E. elements to the interviewee and then ask these questions:

  • Have you seen the impact of applying these elements in your career?
  • Which element(s) is/are the most important in your career field?
  • In what situations are these elements the most challenging to utilize?
  • Would you add or subtract from this list of elements if you could?
  • Do you feel these elements are applicable for careers in this field in the future?

While you have been given the questions for the interviewee to answer, you still need to take some time to be prepared in advance of the interview.  Be sure to either take notes during the interview or ask permission and tape responses so you can remember what was said while completing the Unit 1 worksheet.

Daniel Goleman, a psychologist, was the first to popularize the trait emotional intelligence, sometimes referred to as EI. Emotional intelligence is a person’s capacity to be aware of her or his emotions and feelings towards others to influence their thinking and actions. The four components of EI are:

  • Self-awareness: This is your ability to read your own emotions accurately to know how your actions or lack thereof affect others.
  • Self-management: This is your ability to control or regulate your emotions and act with integrity.
  • Social-awareness: Gives you the ability to understand the needs of others and show empathy towards them.
  • Relationship management: this is your ability to communicate clearly and convincingly, reduce conflict and build strong bonds.

 Select a age between 0-24 months old. Go  to  Youtube  and  search  for  this  age with  the  words  “Child  observation”.    Find  and  watch  30  minuets  of  Video  (you may  combine  videoe  to  reach  30minuets.       Use the summary at the end of the sections in your book on the first two years (Chap 5,6,7,)as a guide in your observation. You may  also observe a child of familymembers or friends or you may select a childcare center that has infants and toddlers.2.Remain as uninvolved as possible during your observation and spend approximatelyone hour observing.  Take notes and record as many words, actions, and expressionsthat you can.  Be as descriptive as possible; include body movements, facialexpressions, and emotional reactions.3.Immediately after observing, expand what you have in your notes with whatever elseyou remember.
