UNIT 2

Human resources (HR) and other policies are critical to the effective and efficient management of any organization. Discuss the following:

  • Provide  examples of HR (or other) policies and how they support or inhibit organizational performance.
  • What  actions should management take to identify and change policies that  inhibit organizational performance?

Assignment

Sometimes, during heated discussions and debates about social policy, the underlying reasons for the policy go unnoticed. Advocates and policymakers may become so committed to their perspectives and to winning the debates that they lose focus on the larger context surrounding an issue. The purpose of policy is to improve the lives and well-being of individuals and groups in our society. As you assume the role of a social work policymaker, consider the importance of keeping the needs and experiences of vulnerable populations at the forefront of your mind in your advocacy efforts. This can help to assure effective policy practice.

For this Assignment, you will analyze a state, federal, or global social welfare policy that affects an at-risk, marginalized, oppressed, underrepresented, or over looked group population. Finally, consider the impact of social policy from the perspective of the group you selected.

Assignment (5-7 double-spaced pages, APA format). In addition to a minimum of eight scholarly references, which may include electronic government documents and reputable websites, your paper should include:

  • A description of the current policy approach for addressing the social issue you selected
  • A description of the current policy goals for addressing the social issue you selected
  • A description of the population the current policy approach covers
  • An explanation of the funding levels for the current policy approach and whether they are sufficient to address the issue
  • An explanation of how this policy may affect at-risk, marginalized, underrepresented, overlooked, or oppressed populations. Identify a specific at-risk population.
  • An analysis of whether or not the policy meets the needs of the population groups most affected by the policy.
  • Recommendations for alternative policies that would address the gaps identified in the policy. Please be specific in recommendations.

You need to find a peer reviewed journal article, that has been published within the last 5 years. A peer reviewed journal article is an article published in a peer review journal only after it has been reviewed by numerous experts in the field.  This review is to make sure the article is not rubbish and provides useful information.

If you using websites, remember many websites that information comes from are suspect in terms of factual and unbiased information. In a nutshell, never use Wikipedia, About.com, Answers.com, or similar websites.  Though some .com sites are acceptable, most students have trouble identifying whether they can be trusted, so an easy guideline to follow is to avoid them. Websites ending in .gov, .net, .edu, .org, and so forth are typically more trustworthy than a .com source.

Your written assignment is point heavy (190 points).  It will be a very intensive paper and there are specific sections which need to be addressed.  To help provide an organized paper, APA headings must be used.  Below I included information on how to format the headings.

APA HEADINGS

APA Style uses a unique headings system to separate and classify paper sections. There are 5 heading levels in APA. The 6th edition of the APA manual revises and simplifies previous heading guidelines. Regardless of the number of levels, always use the headings in order, beginning with level 1. The format of each level is illustrated below:

APA Headings: Level  Format

  1. Centered, Boldface, Uppercase and Lowercase Headings

  2. Left-aligned, Boldface, Uppercase and Lowercase Heading

  3. Indented, boldface, lowercase heading with a period. Begin body text after the period.

  4. Indented, boldface, italicized, lowercase heading with a period. Begin body text after the period.

  5. Indented, italicized, lowercase heading with a period. Begin body text after the period.

THE FINANCING OF HEALTH CARE IN THE UNITED STATES

What’s the importance of health insurance? No one plans to get sick or hurt, but most people need to access health care services at some point in their lives. Health insurance status in the United States is varied and inconsistent – and it is changing over time. Critics argue both in favor of or against universal coverage, citing both benefits and drawbacks of coverages and their associated costs.

Assessing the impact of health insurance coverage on a person’s health is complex; health effects may take a long time to be realized, can vary based on insurance benefits/lack thereof, and are often clouded by confounding variables. Let’s begin our Case by examining the purposes of health insurance, the current health insurance status of the U.S.population, and what current research tells us regarding the use vs. outcomes of health insurance coverage.

Case Assignment

Using the information in the required readings, as well as some additional research in peer-reviewed sources, complete your Case assignment by addressing the following:

  1. Articulate the specific purposes of health insurance.
  2. Provide a summary of the current health insurance status of the U.S. population. Who is covered, and by what type of insurance? What portion of the population is uninsured and underinsured? What are the trends in coverages over time?
  3. Explain how health insurance coverage affects health care utilization, disease treatment and outcomes, self-reported health, and mortality.

Assignment Expectations

  1. Conduct additional research to gather sufficient information to support your analysis.
  2. Provide a response of 3-5 pages, not including title page and references.
  3. There are multiple required items to be addressed herein; please use subheadings to show where you are responding to each required item and to ensure that none are omitted.
  4. Support your paper with peer-reviewed articles, with at least 3 references. Use the following link for additional information on how to recognize peer-reviewed journals:

A CM Tech You Would Want to Work For

In completing your reading for the week you read through a great interview in Chapter 8 titled “An Interview with a CEO You Might Want to Work For.”  It provides great insight into the kind of leadership and strategy that would create a recipe for success.  Intrigued by the interview, you share it with Emma.  Like you, she finds it interesting  and asks you to write your own version of the interview.  Choose four of the questions asked by Cokins in the interview then write your own answers as though you were the CEO of CM Tech.

Your interview paper should include the following key elements:

  1. Provide an introduction to your interview that explains the purpose of the interview (what value can you get from thinking through these questions).
  2. Choose a minimum of four questions used in the interview in the text.  You may add more of your own if you choose.  Be sure to include the question(s) in your paper.
  3. Provide answers to each of the questions as though you were in the role of the CEO of CM Tech.  Support your answers with reasoning and examples or experiences.
  4. Provide a conclusion to your interview that summarizes the key points.

Your report should outline the key concepts in each area listed above and provide complete examples as appropriate.  Be sure your report is a minimum of 4 pages, includes an introduction and conclusion paragraph, title page, and references page.  The title and references pages do not count toward the total page count.

The report should be formatted in APA style and be supported by a minimum of one scholarly reference. Since CM Tech is a fictitious company, you may use great liberty in this assignment in creating or imagining the details needed in order to write your report.

  • Examine several key facts that led to Hofstede’s research and the validity of his Cultural Dimensions theories.
