Labor Unions

Summarize your understanding of union membership today in the US. What is the current status of union membership? Share some statistics and trends. Did you ever belong to a labor union? If you did, do you think union membership benefited you? If you did not, do you think a union would have benefited you? Why or why not?

Use the articles and resources provided to support your ideas.

Reference.

Chapter 11: Working with Labor UnionsMost HRM professionals will work with unions. The unionization process, how to negotiate union contracts, and history of labor unions are discussed.

Chapter 12: Safety and Health at WorkEmployee safety and health are necessary to a productive workplace. This chapter addresses some of the health and safety issues, such as drug use, carpal tunnel, and other issues relating to keeping employees healthy at work.

Recommended: Chapter 13: Successful Employee Communication focuses on HR-related communication, and management styles. Communication is a key component to any and all aspects of HRM.  While some of the information may be covered in other classes such as HRM 302, begin to develop your understanding of HR-related communication.

HR Headline: Pay for Performance Remains Controversial

“Pay for Performance” has made inroads in business, but has remained a hard sell in public school systems. There are some successful examples where teacher pay has been linked to student test scores. For example, in Minnesota, some districts have stopped giving automatic raises for seniority and base 60% of all pay increases on performance. In Denver, unions and school districts designed an incentive program where teachers receive bonuses for student achievement and for earning national teaching certificates. However, some plans have not worked. For example, Cincinnati teachers voted against a merit pay proposal and Philadelphia teachers gave their bonus checks to charity rather than cashing them. It appears that having teachers involved in planning the incentive system is one key factor to success. The same can be said for all incentive plans – if employees don’t buy into them, they will not work.

Your paper may be based on a business entity of your choosing from the public or private sector and must answer the following Research Questions:

1. How could an organization measure the effectiveness of its pay-for-performance plan(s)?

2. From an employee’s perspective, what are the advantages and disadvantages of using a pay-for-performance plan?

3. From an employer’s perspective, what are the advantages and disadvantages of using a pay-for-performance plan?

Mode of Domestic Transportation in Logistics

Road, rail, marine, and air transport in U.S. logistics have been the main options. Today, newer technologies have expanded each of the categories beyond the usual alternatives. The Department of Transportation approved driverless technology for local delivery. The possibility of 30-minute delivery calls for the use of robots and drones. Some other tech is being patented and might be realized in the future. Other companies are looking at delivery robots. Even low-tech ideas like “cargo bikes” are being used in large cities

SLP Assignment

  • -Beginning with the background readings to provide a foundation, create a bullet list of the pros and cons of domestic road, rail, marine, and air transport in logistics. (Citations are required.)
The list should be one, single-spaced page in length.
  • -Using research beyond the lecture and readings, provide two real-world examples of novel modes of delivery being used, tested, or proposed and how they could affect the industry regarding technology, workers, customer service, costs, etc.
The discussion for each new technology should be three-quarters of a page in length.

Resources should be no more than three years old for this case because the industry is changing rapidly, and the goal is to remain relevant throughout your career.

Since you are engaging in research, be sure to cite and reference the sources in APA format. The paper should be written in the third person; this means words like “I,” “we,” and “you” are not appropriate. For more information, see Differences Between First and Third Person. The excessive use of quotes or unoriginal content will directly impact performance since it suggests lack of comprehension and indicates that a student may not have mastered the concepts.
