If the Assignments are done correctly, there should be an alignment from the topic of choice to the evaluation:

  • The topic is researched in the literature. The literature review points out a theoretical gap that needs to be addressed by leadership.
  • The gap is turned into a problem statement.
  • A leadership theory to address the problem is proposed.
  • The theory is depicted in a visual.
  • An evaluation plan describes how the newly developed theory resolves the problem identified in the literature.

Section 6: Conclusion (1–2 pages)

Section 7: References:

  • An APA-formatted reference list of 15–20 peer-reviewed, scholarly journals

Human Resource

Assignment Content

  1. Resource: Grading Guide: FMLA, Labor Law, and OSHA

You are a first-year Human Resource Specialist at “State of Estates” estate planning firm. Norman is the mid-level manager responsible for the southern regional office. The following events have recently occurred in Norman’s office:

    • Ken, an estate planner in Norman’s office, recently adopted a baby with his wife. He applied for 12-week family leave, but was denied by Norman because his wife did not physically give birth. The corporate human resource department (where you work) was not given notice of this decision.
    • June, part of the full-time housekeeping staff, has been asking other employees if they would like to join a union. There are currently no unions within the organization.
    • Maria is concerned about ladders that are placed around the office for remodeling. Norman said not to worry, and that there are no official policies for safety in an office setting.
    • Prepare a  15- to 20-slide Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation with speaker notes responding to Norman from a Human Resource standpoint. The presentation should address the following topics:
    • An overview of the FMLA and its key provisions relating to Ken.
    • Recommended resolution for Ken’s situation (both for Ken as an employee and as a company handling these requests moving forward).
    • An overview of key labor laws to briefly educate Norman on employee rights in unionizing.
    • A brief discussion of OSHA and possible application to Norman’s office setting.
    • Format your presentation consistent with APA guidelines.

Discussion: Equal Employment Opportunity and HRM

Please answer the questions below. Use question and answer (Q&A) format for your response; in other words, include the original question along with your answer in the reply. Within your post, support your responses with information from at least two reputable sources (library and/or Web-based) and provide the full citation at the end. Use APA format for your references. Bring in your own personal experiences, if applicable.

For this Module 1 Discussion, you will first be asked to react to a video report and then do some research and comment on some international aspects of protected categories in employment.

In March 2017, the European Court of Justice ruled that employers may ban Islamic headscarves. As long as all religious symbols are also treated the same way, the court said no discrimination can be claimed.

Watch the video report from Deutsche Welle (DW) Brent Goff Reports for background and then address the discussion questions.

Brent Goff Reports. (2017, March 14). In Europe, no religion at work [Video file]. Retrieved from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LemKVWkoeXE

  1. How do you think the European case discussed in the video report would be decided in the United States? Why? Explain and support your answer.
  2. Select a category (age, race, religion, marital status, criminal/incarceration history, pregnancy, sex, sexual identity, education level, parenthood, national origin, dress, economic status, military status, and so forth).
  3. In the United States, how are individuals in the category that you selected protected from discrimination in employment? Be specific. Give examples.
  4. For the category you have selected, how are U.S. protections different from or similar to protections in another country (You choose the country to make the comparison).

Employment Practices

  • provide an example of two (2) of the following techniques or methods  that you or someone that you know has endured or witnessed: unfair  recruitment, employment application, and interview process. Investigate  the extent to which the chosen technique or method left room for  prohibited employment practices. Next, recommend key corrective actions  that an organization could take in order to mitigate prohibited  employment practices.
  • , select two (2) employment  opportunities with which you are currently familiar, and classify two  (2) types of background checks that would be acceptable. Justify your  response

Training and Development

Imagine that you work for a global automobile manufacturer as a lead training and development associate. The head of human resources (HR) has had meetings with various departments, and a training need was identified by the sales department. Sales have dropped considerably in the last quarter, and through a training needs analysis, it was shown that sales associates lack the proper knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to effectively sell automobiles to various car dealerships in the United States and abroad.

The head of HR has asked that you give him or her a presentation on which major training theory you would recommend to apply to this scenario to equip the sales associates with the necessary skills to increase sales.

Select one training theory. This can be any of the four discussed in this unit or a training theory of your choice that interests you. Then, in your PowerPoint presentation, include the elements listed below.

  • Discuss the training theory and its primary tenets.
  • Explain why you recommend this theory.
  • Discuss two to three activities that you would build from this theory. For example, if you chose action theory, you may create group activities where sales associates run through sales scenarios with each other to see what works and what does not. Feel free to be as creative as you would like with your given theory.
  • Explain how your activities will address each learning style (i.e., visual, audible, and kinesthetic learning styles).

Your presentation must be at least 10 slides in length, not counting the title and reference slides. You are required to use at least one outside source and to utilize the notes section within PowerPoint. Within the notes section, include additional explanations for each slide. As you create your presentation, keep in mind that you are presenting for executives at your organization. All sources used, including the required unit resources, must be cited and referenced according to APA guidelines.

Total Rewards

After a thorough review of the video, provide at least 3 of your own specific reasons why HR might be the right career for you. It’s OK to use points from the video just make them specific to your own thinking. Please make sure your responses are specific and not just bullet points.

In Chapter 7: The Environment – Part II, Hite and Seitz (2016) discuss the existing tension between development and the environment. Development brings economic growth as well as social and environmental changes. To a developing country, economic growth may be of a higher priority than the consequences to the long-term health of its citizens or its environment. On the other hand, poverty can also harm the environment such as how searching for land to farm contributes to deforestation.

Do wealthy nations using the labor of developing nations have responsibilities to the people and environment of that country? Why or why not? Be sure to use examples of existing companies to support your response.

Review the posts of your classmates and respond to at least one other post, offering a substantive comment on that classmate’s position on the issue(s).
