MGT312T Week 3 Apply Exercise

Question 1

Arrow Furniture is a family-owned and operated manufacturer of high-end furniture located in North Carolina. The furniture industry has suffered from foreign competition over recent years. Nationwide, there have been massive layoffs and several large companies have closed. Arrow’s workers are feeling these pressures and have begun displaying counterproductive behaviors. The HR manager recently told Mary Baker, the family member serving as CEO, that employees are threatening to unionize if they don’t get higher pay and more job security. Mary is upset by this comment because the family has supported employees with decent salaries and health benefits. Higher wages are the last thing the company needs if they are to remain competitive.

The Baker family wants to turn things around. They know they will have to be more competitive price-wise. This might be achieved by finding cheaper suppliers, lowering employee labor costs, or increasing productivity. That said, the Baker’s strongly believe that it is important to “take care of their people,” many of whom are lifelong employees.

A global car manufacturer is going to open a new facility in the community. It is likely the company will offer higher salaries and better benefits than offered by Arrow Furniture. The firm is known to offer such benefits in an attempt to reduce the need for a union. Jobs at this plant will be more technically advanced than those at Arrow and the company is offering job training to those who are interested.

The Bakers are aware that the nature of work at Arrow results in moderate levels of hygiene factors and low motivators.

Using the 3-Step Problem-Solving Approach and the Organizing Framework, what should the Bakers do to motivate their employees and get support for the company’s future plans?

Question 2

Review the following conversation:

Marcy:  Dana, can I talk to you for a couple of minutes? We’ve been roommates for two years and I think I have a time management problem. I just don’t get enough done in a day. What do you think?

Dana:  Tell me more. How did you decide that you have a problem?

Marcy:  I never get everything done on my to-do list. The more I get done, the more I end up adding to the list.

Dana:  What would solving the problem look like to you?

Marcy:  Well, I’d get everything done on my list.

Dana:  Is that realistic?

Marcy:  It’s not, but what else am I going to do?

Dana:  What else can you do that will help? Can you work with an advisor? Use a scheduling program?

This is an example of coaching. Describe the process of coaching and explain why is it important for managers to be effective coaches.

A Humbling Experience

 A Competent Response

Purpose of Assignment: This assignment provides a realistic scenario in which students practice to identify a culturally appropriate response while adapting to meet the cultural needs of the client.

Transferable skill: Diversity and Teamwork

Demonstrating awareness and empathy while working collaboratively with people of diverse backgrounds and perspectives. In a profession where cultural sensitivity is paramount, workers will inevitably interact with people from varying religions, races, ethnicities and cultures. Success occurs with culturally competent teamwork.

Instructions:

Examine the following scenario:

In 2012, a devastating earthquake and tsunami struck the country of Japan. Aid and rescue workers from all over the world came to Japan to assist the Japanese people in their recovery. Imagine that you are an international aid worker that has been sent to Japan just after the occurrence of the earthquake and the tsunami. While on your flight to Japan you access various internet resources to learn everything you can about the Japanese culture.

In a 2-page paper discuss the following:

  • How do the Japanese respond to tragedy? Be specific. Give examples.
  • Given the information you have learned about the Japanese culture, how will you adapt your behavior and service so that you are culturally sensitive?
  • Discuss how the Japanese perceive the concepts of personal counseling, accepting assistance from outsiders and how they handle death.

  • Submit paper in APA format using clear and concise grammar.

Organizational Restructuring Memo

You are the head of HR and the leaders of your organization just approached you to restructure the sales team. Currently there are four Divisional Vice Presidents that oversee 15 District Managers each. Moving forward, there will be two Divisional Vice Presidents with three Regional Directors reporting to each of them. Every Regional Director will oversee 10 District Managers.

Refer to the Organizational Chart (attached) for a visual representation of the current and new structure.

Write a 700- to 1,050-word memo to the leaders of your organization in which you complete the following:

  • Recommend the best way to implement the change.
  • Evaluate how to effectively execute your plan.
  • Draft a communications plan that explains the reasons for these changes to the organization.

Strategy, Planning, And Selection

Assume for this assignment that you are being highly considered for a director-level HR management position for JCPenney.  You are in the final phase of the interview process and must respond to the interview panel regarding specific questions and scenarios that will help them determine if you are a good fit for the new role. The company’s culture is centered on the effective development of strategy, plans, and selection criteria aimed at building and sustaining a competitive and profitable organization. It will be extremely important that you respond with a strategic mindset in order to convince the organization you are able to help them ensure the execution of the business strategy.

Write a six page paper in which you:

  • Analyze different types of strategies (cost leadership, differentiation, and focus/niche) and select which one you would deem more appropriate for an “efficiency-minded” retail organization and explain your rationale. How would the selected strategy ultimately affect how HR does its job?
  • Examine the four (4) approaches to job design/redesign and provide an example (not a definition) of each. Then, make a case to the interviewing panel on the importance of effective job design applications in supporting the overall strategic goals of the organization.
  • Consider the challenges and constraints associated with recruiting workers and identify and discuss at least two (2) issues. What advice would you give to ease your selected issues? Be specific.
  • List and describe 2–3 candidate selection process ideas that might add value and overall effectiveness to the process. HINT: http://www.selectinternational.com/blog/bid/147051/5-Tips-for-Designing-an-Effective-Employee-Selection-System. Diversity Workforce

As the HR Manager at Berkley Innovative Technologies, you have been developing a new training manual for employees. Now, the CEO has expressed her concerns about differing religious beliefs in the workplace. She wants to be certain that the organization is up-to-date and compliant with the current legislation on the books as it applies to religious diversity. For this section of the training manual, you will focus on educating the organization’s leaders and supervisors as well as the employees on religious discrimination issues in the workplace as they relate to current legislation.

Diversity Training Manual: Part IV (2–3 pages)

Pick three religious groups you will examine. Some examples are as follows:

  • Orthodox Judaism
  • Hinduism
  • Catholicism

This section of the training manual should include the following information:

  • Provide an explanation of the Civil Rights Act, Title VII 1964 legislation, dealing specifically with the meaning of reasonable accommodation for religious practices. Review the following resources to assist you with this step:
  • For each of the 3 religious groups you selected, describe and explain the following:
    • Include at least 2 religious practices that could easily be accommodated by management without any hardship for the company.
    • Include at least 2 practices that would be difficult to accommodate.

Diversity Training Manual: Part V (2–3 pages)

The CEO has asked you to gather information on one of the most controversial laws regarding diversity in the workplace. After careful review of the laws, you discovered that affirmative action fits this criterion. History has shown that good intentions can sometimes have serious negative unintended consequences. For example, Title IV legislation was intended to give female athletes equal opportunities in sports. Unfortunately, the legislation shifted the discrimination away from female athletes and on to male athletes as many male programs were cut to accommodate the law. Your task for this section of the training manual is to answer the questions listed below outlining affirmative action legislation. Be certain to give attention to both the positive as well as the negative unintended consequences of this legislation.

Part V is to be titled: Affirmative Action

Write a 2–3-page section of your manual that summarizes the following points for part V of the training manual:

  • What is affirmative action?
  • What was the initial intent of affirmative action legislation?
  • What did the landmark Bakke v. Regents case conclude? Be sure to cite your source.
  • What was the basis for the conclusion?
  • What are the positive and negative results of affirmative action legislation?

Diversity Training Manual: Part VI (2–3 pages)

Part VI is to be titled: Diversity Manual Summary

You will end your manual with a 2–3-page conclusion summarizing the main points in the manual. The conclusion should be an overview of all parts, I–V, of the manual that highlights all of the main points. You will need to review the U3 assignment submission to complete this assignment.

HA3110D – Quality Improvement and Risk Management

Discussion 07.2: Partnering with Families

For this discussion you will be accepting the role of patient advocate as well as a care provider. As you recall from week one, number two on the National Quality Strategy Priorities list is patient-and-family centered care.

Prior to the 1980s, family and visitors were restricted to a few hours at a time and absolutely prohibited to stay overnight. When family arrived on discharge day, home care instructions were minimal at best. Invasive treatments, such as bladder irrigation (common at the time) were demonstrated to the patient and family, instructed them to perform the task every day and call if any problems. Family members DID call, and patients did return–with raging infections, wound dehiscence, and irreparable complications.

Fortunately, with the advent of patient-and family-centered care, adequate, on-going education, training and caregiver participation has reduced re-admissions and complications.

Reflect upon what you have learned about changing the concept from families as “visitors” to families as partners. Using the Institute for Family- and Patient-Centered Care website to view sample policies. Identify the policy you like best and respond as assigned below.

In your initial response by Thursday,  1. Choose a policy and discuss what factors might be most important to the patient and family, and what factors might be most important to healthcare providers.* 2. What might be potential risk factors for implementing this policy?

*In this instance, providers refers to all employee who work in healthcare
