Management Team Briefing on Employment Laws

In your new role  as Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) for a major retail organization,  you have been tasked within the first 30 days by the CEO to conduct a  presentation to the management team on employment law awareness. The CEO  informed you that under the previous CHRO the company experienced lack  of employment law understanding, resulting in a few lawsuits that were  not in the company’s favor. Avoiding similar experiences is a high  priority and your thorough presentation to the management team is the  first big step to success.

Prepare a fifteen to twenty (15-20) slide PowerPoint presentation in which you:

  1. Include cover, agenda, conclusion, and reference list slides, all of which may count toward total slide count.
  2. Provide a 1-2 slide overview of employment law based on information found in Chapter 1 of Employment Law for Human Resource Practice.  NOTE: You may use your discretion to decide what information needs to  be addressed as long as your overview is descriptive and relevant.
  3. Include in the remaining slides the following required presentation information:
    • Provide a  three (3) slide minimum covering at least 6 strong bullet points  highlighting a discussion on whom employees and employers are in  determining employment relationships
    • Provide a  three (3) slide minimum covering at least 6 strong bullet points  highlighting a discussion on the concept of employment discrimination
    • Provide a  three (3) slide minimum covering at least 6 strong bullet points  highlighting a discussion on the types of discrimination
    • Provide a three (3) slide minimum covering at least 6 strong bullet points highlighting a discussion on retaliation
  4. Go to https://research.strayer.edu to locate at least three (3) quality academic resources in this assignment. Note: You may only use the resources listed in the course syllabus and those that are specifically provided by the instructor.

Important Notes:  (1) Total number of words in the bullet points are not more important  than the quality of the information. (2) More detailed information  should be included in the footnotes of the presentation. (3)  Presentations must have a business-like professional look.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Text font  size for headings and titles in the presentation must not exceed 36 pt.  For all other text, the font ideally should not exceed 24 pt. Check with  your professor for additional details.
  • Presentation text must be properly aligned throughout the presentation and maintain the same line spacing and font size.
  • Professional presentation templates will be used. Check with the professor on possible examples.
  • If images  found at websites or other sources are placed in the presentation,  credit must be given to the sources with citations and references

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Assess and understand employment laws, the rights they confer on employees, and the processes involved in enforcing these laws.
  • Examine the legal significance of determining whether an employment relationship exists.
  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in employment law.
  • Write clearly and concisely about employment law using proper writing mechanics.

Assessment 2

• Essential Skills

You are planning a special dinner and want to add the perfect seasonings. But your spice drawer is a jumbled mess. You comb through the jars of spices, getting increasingly more annoyed. Where’s the salt? The cilantro? That container of garlic? Frustrating, right? But if you line up the spices neatly on the counter in front of you, you can suddenly see all your options…and calmly choose the best flavoring for your meal.

That’s what critical thinking is—the ability to step back from a problem, assess what you have to work with, and rationally decide the best way forward toward a solution. It’s a key component of practicing your problem-solving skill in this course and beyond. By improving your critical thinking so you can solve problems in the present and future, you’ll take a positive step toward achieving both your personal and professional goals.

In the following Capella Stories, you’ll learn how decorated Thunderbird pilot Nicole Malachowski used critical thinking to achieve her long-held dream: the conferment of the Congressional Medal of Honor on WWII’s Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP).

Capella Stories: Bringing the WASP to New Heights.

Have you ever been confronted with two versions of the same story? It can be hard to know which to believe, right? Historians and students of history (like you!) often face the same challenge. In the following Capella Stories, biographer and historian Kate Clifford Larson walks us through important moments in Harriet Tubman’s life and reveals the critical thinking steps she took to determine their historical accuracy. How will these same steps strengthen your problem-solving skill and help you think critically in your own life? Learn how Harriet Tubman’s biographer used the six steps of critical thinking to discover the real story of this fascinating American hero.

For this assessment, you will complete the Historical Analysis Worksheet [DOCX], using a critical thinking process to evaluate evidence as you explore the causes and long-term impacts related to your issue. Analyze how those in the past have successfully and unsuccessfully tackled the same issues while also considering how these same issues might now be addressed by your organization.

Review the evidence you compiled and compared for Assessment 1, Evaluating Historical Sources. Then begin to formulate your explanation or main arguments about your chosen issue. Consider the historical context of the issue, its challenges, and the strategies and approaches people used to deal with those challenges.

  • Identify the state where the organization is located. Is the state a right-to-work state? If yes, explain what this means. If no, explain what this means. Why are the employees deciding to unionize? What are the mandatory bargaining subjects? Other than wages and hours, what are five other terms and conditions of employment? What are permissive bargaining subjects that will be negotiated? List at least five.

Discuss why you selected each supervisor, and compare/contrast their conflict management styles. Each supervisor must have a different conflict style. Explain how each supervisor can contribute to conflict resolution strategies used during negotiation.
