Discussion 6351 2

Social workers often have commitments to specific policies, laws, or funding of programs that are vital to the population they serve or an issue that they strongly support. Such commitments often lead social workers to become involved in political issues and the campaigns of specific candidates. Being a social worker, such campaign experiences, the outcomes of your efforts, and how effective you felt you were may affect your view of the political process and the likelihood of becoming involved in similar campaigns in the future.

For this Discussion, reflect on your experiences if you have ever participated in a political campaign. What was the outcome of your participation? If you have not participated in a campaign, choose a campaign topic you support or oppose and consider the ways you might like to participate in that campaign. Likewise, think about your experiences if you have ever lobbied on a topic. If you have not, choose a topic for which you might like to lobby in favor or against. Finally, consider how you think social workers might have a powerful and positive effect as elected officials.

Post an explanation of the role of lobbying and campaigning in social work practice. Then, explain how you think social workers might have a powerful and positive effect as elected officials. Finally, explain of the impact, if any, the experiences and opinions of your colleagues have had on your own experiences and opinions.

Motivation is the psychological process that arouses and directs  behavior. There are three theories that will help us understand the  motivation of employees in the workplace.

  1. Goal-setting theory – Suggests behavior can be motivated with  specific, challenging goals that are obtainable. The key to goal-setting  theory is ensuring employees understand what is expected and accept the  goals.
  2. Self-efficacy – Is the belief “I Can/Can’t Do this Task.”  Self-efficacy is the belief in one’s personal ability to do a task.  There is a lot to be said to scoring high in this trait. People who are  confident about their ability tend to succeed, whereas those who doubt  their ability tend to fail.
  3. Reinforcement theory – Explains how behavior can be altered by  administering positive or negative consequences to actions of employees.  Behavior with positive consequences tends to be repeated, and behavior  with negative consequences tends not to be repeated.

Logistics Planning

Welcome to the Case Assignment assignment for the third module of the course. Please read the article below which concerns locating near customers, and also review the Background Readings.

Crammer, L. J. & Wegfahrt, A. M., (2006). Ranked #9 proximity to major markets. Area Development Site and Facility Planning, 41(5).

Abstract:

Although a company’s location criteria and business model change over time, it is really the customers who establish broad location strategy. Furthermore, the business model established by most companies will be based on customer preferences—which also change over time. For example, the old-school model used for manufacturing included the need to inventory raw materials and sub-assemblies at the manufacturing site.

Case Assignment

Then, in a 5- to 6-page paper answer the following question.

Do customers really drive location and how does this affect logistical planning? Choose a specific industry (e.g., beer, clothing, automobiles, etc.). Compare the location decision of a Manufacturing company, to a Distributor, to a Retail location. How much influence does the customer of each of these types of businesses have on the location decision? How does this effect the logistics of each?

Assignment Expectations

Research the topic with information from the background readings as well as any other resources you find on your own. The paper should be 5–6 pages in length and have a cover sheet and a reference page. Clarity of presentation is important, as well as your ability to cover the topic in a succinct, organized manner with research to back up your points. Use at least 3 different sources of information and annotate your sources of information appropriately on your references page and within the text as necessary. You will be assessed on how well you develop this case and demonstrate your understanding of location decisions as applied in a logistics context. Submit your assignment for grading by the end of this module.

Research Project

The core assessment task in this subject is a research project

analysing your own experiences with work, organisations and

society. There are both collaborative and individual components

to this task:

1. You will write an individual analysis of 1,500 words

about the vignette you presented as a group and

submit this to Canvas at the start of Week 8.

2. The topic is Harrington, S., Warren, S. and Rayner, C. (2013), ‘Human Resource Management practitioners’ responses to workplace bullying: Cycles of symbolic violence’, Organization, 22(3), pp. 368–389.

Vickers, M.H. (2007), ‘Autoethnography as sensemaking: A story of bullying’, Culture and Organization, 13(3), pp. 223–237.

Review the following lectures:

Introduction:

A large technology company’s CEO decided as one part of his or her plan to revitalize the company that he or she wanted to end the company’s work-from-home policy. In an internal memo from the Executive Vice President of People and Development, working at the office rather than at home was necessary because of the need for employees to communicate and collaborate and to reduce the chance that speed and quality would be diminished. Criticism of the firm’s policy change focused on the message that not allowing work from home sends to employees: We can’t trust you to get the work done.

Many employees want to work at home, so companies are using working at home as a benefit that helps recruit and retain talented employees. Several studies have demonstrated benefits from working at home. Cisco Systems found that employees who could work remotely from home experienced an increase in their quality of life. This could result from reducing the hassles of commuting to work and allowing employees to better balance work and life responsibilities such as managing childcare, running errands, or dealing with a sick child, spouse, or family member. Another study showed that when employees of a Chinese travel agency were allowed to work from home, they were more productive, resulting in cost savings of $2,000 per employee each year. Finally, a study found that office employees who work from home may work fifty-seven hours per week before they feel their work-life is out of balance, compared to thirty-eight hours per week for employees who work at their office.

Working at home also may have significant disadvantages. The disadvantages include employees taking advantage of the policy to extend their weekends by not working in the office on Fridays or Mondays and the loss of the potential benefit from having face-to-face interactions with colleagues that are useful for sharing knowledge and generating creative solutions to product or service problems. Being in the office is especially important today because many jobs require close collaboration with peers or working on team projects. Also, unplanned personal interactions occurring at the office can lead to new ideas or working relationships. The biggest problems for employees working from home is overcoming other employees’ and managers’ perceptions that they are not as productive as they could be, that they lack focus, and that they lose “face time,” which leads to fewer opportunities for promotions.

Tasks:

  • Analyze whether companies should have a policy that allows all employees to work at home.
  • Evaluate which jobs are best suited for working at home.
  • Analyze what role technology can play in allowing employees to work at home.
  • Explain whether the interaction using technology can replace interpersonal face-to-face interaction between employees or between employees and their manager.
  • Determine why some employees don’t take advantage of flexible work options such as working at home, for example, some believe it hurts their career.

To support your work, use your course and textbook readings and also use the South University Online Library. As in all assignments, cite your sources in your work and provide references for the citations in APA format.

Submission Details:

  • Present a 4- to 5-page paper in a Microsoft Word document formatted in APA style. Cite any sources using the APA guidelines.
  • Name your file as SU_HRM5060_W5_Project_LastName_FirstName.

Capital

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY: Throughout this course, you analyzed your current work environment to identify their acquiring, developing, and training practices. Employees are the biggest asset and contribute to the culture and overall performance of the organization. The final part of this project requires you to determine how to leverage on the human capital within your organization. Use the research you have complied throughout this course to determine how to appropriately develop and motivate your employees.

Develop a final written proposal (1,250-1,500 words), discussing performance indicators, rewards and incentives, and a plan for motivating employees. Your proposal must include the following:

  1. An evaluation of the current employee status. Describe tasks and performance indicators that contribute to the overall performance on the job.
  2. Develop strategies to encourage employees. How will you reward them for their performance and support them during difficulty?
  3. Describe strategies to leverage on employee assets. How will you identify their strengths and use them to better the performance and skills of individual employees?
  4. Describe a vision for the overall culture you aspire to develop in your organization.
  5. How will you integrate rewards and incentives to remain competitive in your market and appeal to your employees?
