Project 4: Controlling

Purpose

In this project, you will gain an understanding of the control function in a business setting.  You will compare actual performance with standards, and measure the progress toward the organizational goals, addressing any deviations through corrective action.

Outcome Met by Completing This Assignment

  • develop measures and assess outcomes against plans and standards to improve organizational effectiveness

How to Set Up the Paper

Create a Word or Rich Text Format (RTF) document that is double-spaced using 12-point font.  The final product will be 3-4 pages in length excluding the title page and reference page.  Write clearly and concisely.

Create a title page with a title, course number and section, your name and the instructor’s name.

Scenario

The following chart displays the results of the first year’s production of a new electric-car produced by Sleek Motors.  The table was created from data supplied by the company’s entire production department managed by Isaac Newton, as a means of controlling production output.   You recently joined the production department as a quality assurance associate after grading with a degree in business.   Your manager, Tomas has asked you to do an analysis on the first year’s production results.  Tomas indicated that this information will be used by the Vice President in his evaluation of areas of improvement, change, or processes used by the production department in the production of the mini-car.  The company aims for the highest possible quality products for consumers.

The chart below describes the standards set by the department and the results for each branch of Sleek Motors.  A comparison of the standard to the results allows the reader to form conclusions about the success or failure of the production department to meet the goals envisioned by the company. It also allows the reader to recognize patterns from the data from which conclusions can be drawn as to the relationship between elements (e.g. cost expended vs time expended; those who spent more time had a higher cost).

Use the following headings and instructions to complete the project:

Introduction

  • Write an Introduction paragraph.  The Introduction paragraph is the first paragraph of the paper and will be used to describe to the reader the intent of the paper explaining the main points covered in the paper.  This intent should be understood prior to reading the remainder of the paper so the reader knows exactly what is being covered in the paper.
  • Consider writing the introduction last to ensure that all of the main points are covered.

 Controls

  • Explain what control means in a business setting
  • Explain why Sleek Motors needs to be concerned with the results for the electric-car

Standard Specifications

  • Compare the actual performance with the standards for the electric-car drawing conclusions from what is evident from the data in the table.  Make sure to discuss each standard and explain the results for each branch.
  • Analyze the deviations between the branches and the standards for each metric.
  • Determine whether more control is necessary or if the standard should be changed.  Explain the reasoning.

Corrective Action

  • Explain how implementing Total Quality Management can develop solutions to resolve Sleek Motors’ issues with meeting the standards and/or make changes to processes or behaviors.

Conclusion

Create a concluding paragraph.  The Conclusion summarizes the main topics discussed in the paper.

Review the Paper

Read the paper to ensure all required elements are present.

The following are specific requirements that you will follow.  Use the checklist to mark off that you have followed each specific requirement.

Checklist

Specific Project Requirements

Proofread your paper

Read and use the grading rubric while completing the paper to ensure all requirements are met that will lead to the highest possible grade.

Third person writing is required.  Third person means that there are no words such as “I, me, my, we, or us” (first person writing), nor is there use of “you or your” (second person writing).  If uncertain how to write in the third person, view this link: http://www.quickanddirtytips.com/education/grammar/first-second-and-third-person

Contractions are not used in business writing, so do not use them.

Paraphrase and do not use direct quotations.  Paraphrase means you do not use more than four consecutive words from a source document.  Removing quotation marks and citing is inappropriate.  Instead put a passage from a source document into your own words and attribute the passage to the source document.  There should be no passages with quotation marks.  Using more than four consecutive words from a source document would require direct quotation marks.  Changing words from a passage does not exclude the passage from having quotation marks.   If more than four consecutive words are used from source documents, this material will not be included in the grade.

You are expected to use the research and weekly course materials to develop the analysis and support the reasoning.   There should be a robust use of the course material.  Material used from a source document must be cited and referenced.  A reference within a reference list cannot exist without an associated in-text citation and vice versa.  Changing words from a passage does not exclude the passage from having quotation marks.

Use in-text citations and provide a reference list that contains the reference associated with each in-text citation.

You may not use books in completing this problem set unless part of the course material.  Also, do not use a dictionary, Wikipedia or Investopedia or similar sources.

Provide the page or paragraph number in every in-text citation presented.  Since the eBook does not have page numbers, include the chapter title and topic heading.  If using a video, provide the minutes and second of the cited material.

Assignment 2: Position Paper Two – Media and Society

This is the second of two (2) position papers based on the following scenario to be completed in this course.
Again,  imagine that you are running for a state office (e.g., governor,  senator, or Congressional representative) and you have to prepare a  position paper for a debate on controversial issues in the news. [Select  one (1) of the topics addressed in Weeks 5-9 of this class.]  Remember  that you are addressing a significant segment of your state’s  population and you want to be elected to public office, so your topic  will have to have a broad appeal, such as public trust and the media,  the loss of privacy, safeguarding the First Amendment, online  harassment, and the dangers of privatizing public information, among  other topics from those chapters.

You  will want your position paper to demonstrate critical thinking, sound  logic, valid claims, personal passion, and credible support that is  cited correctly because the paper will be provided to the news media  before the debate and will be scrutinized by the media and reported on  regarding these criteria.

Write a two to three (2-3) page (500 to 750 words) paper in which you:

  1. Introduce  your position using a thesis statement in the first paragraph,  including a quote, question, or statistic from your reliable sources and  an overview of the main points you will cover. (It’s important to grab  the audience’s interest and inform the audience of what the main and  support points are.)
  2. Provide two or three (2-3) major points to support your thesis statement. (Put each major point in a separate paragraph.)
  3. Provide one (1) paragraph in which you identify and answer an expected argument against your view.
  4. Organize arguments and support your claims effectively.
  5. Demonstrate  personal passion for your position and critical thinking with  persuasive language, sound logic, valid claims, and credible support for  the claims.
  6. Use  the Strayer University Library at https://research.strayer.edu to  locate and provide two to three (2-3) credible and reliable sources (in  addition to the textbook) about current events, which have been  published in the last five (5) years and are cited correctly in the  position paper. (Wikipedia, dictionaries, and encyclopedias are unacceptable and will not count toward your number of credible sources.)
  7. Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:
Be  typed, double-spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with  one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references..Include  a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s  name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover  page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment  page length. The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:
Apply critical thinking skills to the analysis of issues involving mass media and society.
  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in media and society.
  • Write clearly and concisely about media and society using proper writing mechanics.

Option #2: Managing Human Capital

One of the defining responsibilities of a human resource professional is to effectively manage human capital. There are many strategies and tactics that can be employed, including certain recruitment and selection techniques, compensation incentives, and training and development. In whatever strategies and tactics are taken, the intention is to assist senior management in creating and sustaining a well-structured and well-managed operation. The most important measure of organizational effectiveness for a business is usually expressed in terms of how well its net profitability compares with its target profitability. Additional measures associated with organizational effectiveness can include, but are not limited to, an organization’s growth data and customer satisfaction survey results.

With that background, write a paper that addresses the following:

  • Assess the term “human capital” and its relevance for an organization.
  • Discuss the role and function of human resources in relation to human capital.
  • Present four strategies that a human resource professional would propose to an organization to more effectively manage their human capital, including how a human resource professional would be an integral component of that plan.

Your paper should be:

  • 5-7 pages in length, or about 2300 words, not including title and reference pages (which are required). Include a formal references page.

5 PAGES – Project Management Expert NEEDED- APA Expert ONLY_ IF YOU CAN'T MEET DEADLINE DO NOT BID

Selecting Metrics for a Home Renovation Project

Since metrics keep stakeholders in tune to the health of a project, metrics must be a clear and truthful representation of project status. Consider this scenario.

You are the project manager of a company that does home remodeling and you have just been given a major remodeling project which will update the electrical and heat and air systems, kitchen, and the single bathroom of a house built in 1930. Your project also adds another bedroom with a master suite. The client has authorized a budget of $95,000 and wants the house ready for Thanksgiving, which is six months away.

Your general contractor (GC) has called you in to discuss the project and asks you to put together a set of metrics that will communicate the project status to her, to the homeowners, the building trade groups, and any other stakeholders. Your GC has asked to meet again in three days with your recommendation which you must be able to defend.

Prepare your metrics of project health and be ready to defend the following:

  • how many metrics you will use and why that is the “right” number,
  • what the metrics are that you have chosen and why,
  • explain that you will use both quantitative and qualitative metrics what they are and why,
  • explain how and when you’ll get the data,
  • what metrics will allow you to find mistakes early enough in the project for correction, and,
  • explain which metrics will improve client satisfaction.

Remember that metrics must have a purpose, have a baseline and target, a way to measure, a way to appropriately interpret them and a reporting structure. Be ready to defend your choices relative to those things too. You will present your ideas in a formal paper for the purposes of this class.

Paper Requirements:

  • Be sure to properly organize your writing and include an introductory paragraph, headings/subheadings for the body of your work, discussion recommendations, and a conclusion.
  • Format your entire paper in accordance with the CSU-Global Guide to Writing and APA (Links to an external site.).
  • Your paper should be at least five pages. The page count does not include the required title page and reference page, nor does the page count include any supplemental pages, should you use them, such as appendices.
