Discussion

Adversity and Depression Treatment Disparities

Discussion related to early life adversity’s impact on the development of depression in later life. Student will research methods to improve treatment disparities among children and young adults who experience early adversity.

Read Stern, K. R. & Thayer, Z. M. (2019). Adversity in childhood and young adulthood predicts young adult depression. This is Module 8.

Research on your own to uncover methods to improve statistics found in the attached literature. Post for your peers what you find that could be useful to close the gap and offer potential improvement in the treatment disparity of adversity and its impact on development of depression.

For the Discussion (Include the corresponding number below as you respond in your initial post):

1. What did you take from the literature attached to the discussion board?

2. What literature did you find on your own that might be helpful for this population?

3. What resources and tools would you need to help implement helpful interventions in the primary care setting?

Professional Associations Membership

Examine the importance of professional associations in nursing. Choose a professional nursing organization that relates to your specialty area, or a specialty area in which you are interested. In a 750‐1,000 word paper, provide a detailed overview of the organization and its advantages for members. Include the following:

  1. Describe the organization and its significance to nurses in the specialty area. Include its purpose, mission, and vision. Describe the overall benefits, or “perks,” of being a member.
  2. Explain why it is important for a nurse in this specialty field to network. Discuss how this organization creates networking opportunities for nurses.
  3. Discuss how the organization keeps its members informed of health care changes and changes to practice that affects the specialty area.
  4.  Discuss opportunities for continuing education and professional development.

And the Band Played On

Discussion Prompt #1

Please watch the film, And the Band Played On.  This film may be available on the Internet through free sites such as Youtube and Vimeo (please note: accessing these sites is at your own risk).  You may also view the film for purchase online through sites such as Amazon or HBO.

Movie: And the Band Played On (1993), Roger Spottiswoode (Director). Depicts how the CDC discovered how HIV was being transmitted. The film is both entertaining and educational, and it depicts the principles of epidemiology, human behavior, and society’s view of controversial topics.

  • What factors inhibited the early war against acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)? Do you believe the AIDS outbreak could have been stopped? Why or why not?  What role does advocacy play in the film? How much publicity does HIV/AIDS receive today?  What’s the story of HIV/AIDS in the 21st century? Explain.

Discussion Prompt #2

  • How do occupation and culture influence psychosocial stressors that affect middle-aged adults? How does your occupation influence psychosocial stressors?

1 page each

Instructions: unit 7

Instructions:

For this discussion, you are to use the following website: https://www.census.gov/acs/www/data/data-tables-and-tools/data-profiles/2017/ (Links to an external site.)

  • On the landing page, type in the name of your state and then the name of your city or place.
  • Click on “Get Data Profile.”
  • On the new page, you will see links to 4 sets of information on your area:
    • Social
    • Education
    • Housing
    • Demographic
  • Choose any two variables you think might be related and find them using the links to the related set.  In the tables, locate the variables you chose to work with. For example, you could use the number of rooms (in a house) under Housing and household incomes and benefits under Economy.
  • Find the values for each of your two variables for several years. For example, you might use the number of rooms and household income for 2012- 2017.
  • Use Excel to make a scatterplot and to find the correlation coefficient. You should then have 6 points on the scatterplot, one for each year.

Share your scatterplot and correlation coefficient in your post and use them to address the following in your discussion post:

  • Why did you think a relationship exists between the two variables you chose?
  • Based on the Excel scatterplot and output
    • State what type of relationship exists:  Negative, positive, or none.
    • Describe the relationship in words, including what happens to one as the other changes. For example, as the number of rooms in a house increases, does the family income increase?
  • Does the statistical information you obtained support or refute your alternative hypothesis that a relationship exists?
    • How?
    • If you did not find a relationship, why do you think that is?
  • What is the value of knowing there is a correlation between the variables? For example, what businesses might flourish in a wealthy area?
  • Would another variable better explain the relationship?
  • How might the city use such information to make improvements?  For example, if you found a relationship between crime and poverty, would it make sense to address poverty as a priority?
  • Can you conclude that one variable is causing the other? Why or why not?

Please be sure to validate your opinions and ideas with citations and references in APA format.

Estimated time to complete: 2 hours

Literature Review

While the implementation plan prepares students to apply their research to the problem or issue they have identified for their capstone project change proposal, the literature review enables students to map out and move into the active planning and development stages of the project.

A literature review analyzes how current research supports the PICOT, as well as identifies what is known and what is not known in the evidence. Students will use the information from the earlier PICOT Question Paper and Literature Evaluation Table assignments to develop a 750-1,000 word review that includes the following sections:

  1. Title page
  2. Introduction section
  3. A comparison of research questions
  4. A comparison of sample populations
  5. A comparison of the limitations of the study
  6. A conclusion section, incorporating recommendations for further research
