Please use in text citation, reference list, apa 7 format, references last 5 years from professional sources.

Section 1: The Disaster, Man-Made or Natural

What disasters may strike your community and why? For example, do you live in “Tornado Alley,” or has climate change resulted in unusual cold weather snaps or blizzards in your community? Are you located in a flood plain? Include possible diseases that may result from a natural disaster, such as tetanus or cholera.

Section 2: The Nursing Response

Formulate responses to the disaster, considering systems and community levels of intervention.

Review websites where a disaster plan may be available for the public, or if one is not currently available, call public health department to see if a disaster plan exists for your community and what the plan contains.

In addition to reviewing websites for information about your local disaster plan, you will need to locate best practice/evidence-based practice guidelines in professional literature to determine whether your community’s disaster plan is as sound as it might be or if there is room for improvement.

Section 3: Is My Community Prepared for a Disaster?

What conclusions can you draw about your community’s preparedness plan from having completed this evaluation?

The King of Sharks: A Native American Myth from Hawaii

Retold by S. E. Schlosser

One day, the King of Sharks saw a beautiful girl swimming near the shore. He immediately fell in love with the girl.

Transforming himself into a handsome man, he dressed himself in the feathered cape of a chief and followed her to her village.

The villagers were thrilled by the visit of a foreign chief. They made a great luau, with feasting and games.

The King of Sharks won every game, and the girl was delighted when he asked to marry her.

The King of Sharks lived happily with his bride in a house near a waterfall.

The King of Sharks, in his human form, would swim daily in the pool of water beneath the falls.

Sometimes he would stay underneath the water so long that his bride would grow frightened.

But the King of Sharks reassured her, telling her that he was making a place at the bottom of the pool for their son.

Before the birth of the child, the King of Sharks returned to his people.

He made his wife swear that she would always keep his feathered cape about the shoulders of their son.

When the child was born, his mother saw a mark upon his back that looked like the mouth of a shark.

It was then she realized who her husband had been.

The child’s name was Nanave.

As he grew towards manhood, Nanave would swim daily in the pool beside the house.

Sometimes, his mother would gaze into the pool and see a shark swimming beneath the water.

Each morning, Nanave would stand beside the pool, the feathered cloak about his shoulders, and would ask the passing fishermen where they were going to fish that day.

The fisherman always told the friendly youth where they intended to go. Then Nanave would dive into the pool and disappear for hours.

The fishermen soon noticed that they were catching fewer and fewer fish.

The people of their village were growing hungry. The chief of the village called the people to the temple.

“There is a bad god among us,” the chief told the people. “He prevents our fishermen from catching fish. I will use my magic to find him.” The chief laid out a bed of leaves.

He instructed all the men and boys to walk among the leaves. A human’s feet would bruise the tender leaves, but the feet of a god would leave no mark.

Nanave’s mother was frightened.

She knew her son was the child of a god, and he would be killed if the people discovered his identity.

When it came turn for the youth to walk across the leaves, he ran fast and slipped.

A man caught at the feathered cape Nanave always wore to prevent him from being hurt. But the cape fell from the youth’s shoulders, and all the people could see the shark’s mouth upon his back.

The people chased Nanave out of the village, but he slipped away from them and dived into the pool.

The people threw big rocks into the pool, filling it up. They thought they had killed Nanave.

But his mother remembered that the King of Sharks had made a place for her son at the bottom of the pool, a passage that led to the ocean. Nanave had taken the form of a shark and had swum out to join his father, the King of Sharks, in the sea.

But since then, the fishermen have never told anyone where they go fishing, for fear the sharks will hear and chase the fish away. (Schlosser, 2017)

Please post 1 peer response

In the peer response, include the following:

  • Why do you agree or disagree with the initial response about which character is the protagonist and who is the antagonist?
  • In what ways do you think that ambiguity reflects the reality of life in general?

Please be sure to validate your opinions and ideas with citations and references in APA format.

Discussion Post 1

 COLLAPSE

The article I have chosen is

Mohn, C., & Rund, B. R. (2016). Significantly improved neurocognitive function in major depressive disorders 6 weeks after ECT. Journal of Affective Disorders202, 10-15.

I have always been interested in Electroconvulsive therapy since I find it fascinating and related to my practice area. The treatment is majorly utilized for severe major depression that has not responded to other forms of treatment. I used the Walden University database to find the most relevant article related to this issue. I did not have any difficulties accessing the article though I found many articles relating to the topic, and I had to narrow down to the most appropriate one. I found an article that had information on ‘significantly improved neurocognitive function in major depressive disorders in 6 weeks after ECT’. The information enlightened me on what Electroconvulsive therapy is all about and expected after the treatment is done. I found information on the side effects of Electrovulsive therapy and who are eligible to undertake the treatment. I discovered that some patients suffer from reduced cognitive function, mainly on the speed of processing, reduced cognitive function, and episodic memory, usually the very first week of the therapy. I recommend the database to any user who might have anything to research on but has problems getting articles with credible, adequate, and reliable information. I also recommend the database because the articles found there are reasonable and trustworthy. There are many articles regarding a specific topic; therefore, one has a range of articles to choose from. Generally, the Walden university database is a great place to find the best articles related to a particular topic to acquire more information.

Discussion Post 2

Fatigue Amongst Emergency Department Nurses

I chose an article about fatigue amongst nurses working in the emergency department as I feel this article would be most relatable. I have only been as registered nurse for three years, but I am able to understand how easily it is to become overwhelmed and burned out. This article assesses the relationship between demographic factors, physical health, psychological distress and job-related psychosocial factors (psychological job demands, job control and social support) and prolonged fatigue among emergency department nurses (Al-Abdallah & Malak, 2019).

From the student portal, I was able to access the academic resources and then library under the dropdown menu. On the library homepage there were several search options such as by publications or databases. Selecting the databases option brought me to a list of different choices including CINAHL Plus with full text. Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature: a large collection of journals and e-books on many nursing and allied health topics (n.d-a). Clicking this link then brought me to a search bar where I then typed in a general topic such as: “emergency department nurses and fatigue”. I was then given access to several peer-reviewed articles in which I chose the one that fit my topic of choice. Thereafter, I was able to access the full article and other relevant resources.

I had no difficulties searching for this article as the Walden University’s library has made everything easily accessible for students. I do believe the database CINAHL is most useful to my colleagues as they will continue to need peer-reviewed articles throughout their program. I recommend this database because it provides peer-reviewed articles that are relevant and within five years. Additionally, students can access the Walden University library if there is ever a question about if what you’ve found is a journal article (n.d-b).
