WEEK 7

Reflect on the role that the electoral process and government plays in one’s daily work and family life. As nurses, health policy can influence both arenas of our lives. What policy issues might drive nurses to lobby Congress and/or get involved in campaign politics? What strategies might nurses use to have their voices heard?

The Belmont Report and the Declaration of Helsinki

The Belmont Report (1979) and the Declaration of Helsinki (1964) serve to reinforce a view that such ethical codes are all that are necessary to protect vulnerable research participants. However, these codes also require thoughtful moral interpretation. In the context of time (1932) and place (Macon County, Alabama), do you believe that moral interpretation of the ethical principles of both of these documents would have influenced Nurse Rivers’ role in the Tuskegee Syphilis study? How?  Why? In the context of present day (2020), apply your interpretation of the ethical principles from these documents to research involving human subjects anywhere. What might account for the differences in the role of Nurse Rivers then and the role of the nurse involved in research today?

Health assessment

For the middle-aged adult, exercise can reduce the risk of various health problems. Choose two at-risk health issues that regular physical exercise and activity can help prevent and manage. Discuss the prevalence of each of these health problems in society today. Describe measures that you would take as a nurse to assist clients with health promotion measures to incorporate exercise and physical activity into their lives. Include the kind of activities you would recommend, the amount of exercise, and the approach you would use to gain cooperation from the client. Support your response with evidence-based literature.
