Assignment Prompt

This course is designed to prepare investigators involved in the design and/or conduct of research involving human subjects to understand their obligations to protect the rights and welfare of subjects in research. The course material presents basic concepts, principles, and issues related to the protection of research participants. 

Evidence based research involving human subjects requires that researchers be cognizant of and adhere to the important tenets necessary to protect subjects from abuse, harm, injury, and/or other undesirable outcomes resulting from the research process.  Based on this fact, write a minimum of 2 pages (Title page and Reference not included in page count) of an APA formatted paper answering the following questions with a minimum of 3 “short” sentences for each question:

1. Historical background of human subjects protection? (10 points)
2. Find and discuss at least one historical incident of human subjects abuse in research and what human right was violated. (10 points)
3. What steps will you take to minimize risks on human subjects? (10 points)
4. What populations are considered vulnerable populations and why? (10 points)
5. What are appropriate ways to recruit subjects? (10 points)
6. How would you properly obtain consent? (10 points)
7. What are the elements of a properly executed consent? (10 points) 
8. What committees are responsible for monitoring the protection of human subjects? (10 points)

Scoring Scheme:

• Total points for questions/content: 80 points
• Title page and a minimum of 2 References: 10 points
• Minimum of 3 “short” sentences to answer each question: 10 points
• TOTAL POINTS: 100 (the gradebook will re-weight this total as 50 points or 5% of the course grade)

The needs of the pediatric patient differ depending on age, as do the stages of development and the expected assessment findings for each stage. In a 500-750-word paper, examine the needs of a school-aged child between the ages of 5 and 12 years old and discuss the following:

1. Compare the physical assessments among school-aged children. Describe how you would modify assessment techniques to match the age and developmental stage of the child.
2. Choose a child between the ages of 5 and 12 years old. Identify the age of the child and describe the typical developmental stages of children at that age.
3. Applying developmental theory based on Erickson, Piaget, or Kohlberg, explain how you would developmentally assess the child. Include how you would offer explanations during the assessment, strategies you would use to gain cooperation, and potential findings from the assessment.

Mrs. Y

Mrs. Y is an 84-year-old client who was recently discharged from the hospital for an infected diabetic ulcer on her left leg. During her hospitalization, Mrs. Y required intravenous antibiotic therapy through a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) line.

Due to Mrs. Y’s long history of diabetes, her physician ordered that intravenous antibiotic therapy be continued at home. Subsequently, home health services were initiated, a home health nurse was assigned to Mrs. Y’s case, and an initial home visit was scheduled.

The home health nurse arrives at Mrs. Y’s home and introduces herself to the client and the family. The nurse explains the home nursing services that will be provided, including the PICC line and intravenous antibiotic therapy treatments.

During the initial home visit, the nurse assessed the physiological, psychological, functional, and safety needs of the client. The nurse’s findings were as follows:

• Mrs. Y lives alone; however, her daughter checks on her frequently throughout the day.
• The client is noted to have moderate functional issues and ambulates with a cane.
• The client has several throw rugs in the main walking quarters and minimal lighting throughout the hallways.
• Mrs. Y states “I used to get around my house with ease, but now I get a little tired and have to sit down and rest frequently.”

Consider Mrs. Y’s current health status and functional decline, then address the following:

4. Complete the Nursing Plan of Care (table in the worksheet) describing what should be implemented for Mrs. Y.
   1. Goals: Establish at least one (1) goal for each of the nursing diagnoses you identified (for a total of 3 goals). Goals should be: patient specific, measurable, actionable, realistic, and time limited.
   2. Nursing Interventions: Describe at least three (3) nursing interventions for each of the goals (for a total of 9 nursing interventions). Each intervention should be in alignment with the goal it is supporting.

Scenario 3: 11-year-old boy complains of wheezing and difficulty “getting enough air.” Notices it more when he is playing baseball and symptoms improve when exercise activity stops. He says that the symptoms are getting worse and the symptoms are even occurring at rest. Mother says the child is allergic to cat dander and his next-door neighbor in their apartment building recently began sheltering cats for the local humane society. In this course, you will write a term paper on a current medical ethics issue of your choice. Give this some thought, this will be the topic you will be using for the outline, rough draft, and final term paper assignments. Make sure you can find articles for support of your topic. Read the term paper requirements before you select your medical ethics issue topic to insure it is what you want to research.

Your term paper should:

• Discuss the technical aspects of your topic in general terms.
• Discuss the public policy debates relevant to the topic you choose. This section should cover arguments that are in favor of and opposed to the use of the techniques or products.
• Express your personal opinion regarding the importance of the topic and the validity of the pro and con arguments. 

Week 6 Term Paper: Rough Draft

This week, you will submit a rough draft of your term paper.

A rough draft is not expected to be polished, and as such, this assignment will be graded on a completion basis. However, in order to receive full credit for the assignment, the following components must be met:

• The rough draft includes an introduction, a minimum of four body paragraphs, and a conclusion.
• A minimum of three references are incorporated as supporting evidence.
• Use the outline you posted as a guide. As you draft you may find that changing some pieces is necessary for the paper to make sense.
