Many older adults are prescribed psychotropic medications. What are the side effects of these medications and how do they impact the normal aging older adult?

Psychotropic medications commonly administered to manage psychiatric and behavioral systems among the elderly expose older patients to potentially harmful side effects due to their vulnerable and weak immunity. In this case, aging causes an increase in adverse reactions to drugs. Additionally, depression is a commonly experienced condition affecting almost 15% of the elderly living in a community. However, the use of prescriptions such as antidepressants endorsed during primary care is of great significance in suppressing depression. Conversely, recommendations by the National Institute of Health and Clinical excellence advocate the use of antidepressants that put into consideration the side effects caused upon patient’s health.

Nonetheless, it is of great essence as a geriatric nurse to improve your awareness and knowledge regarding prescriptions on psychotropic medications. Hence, it is imperative that nurses ought to be well conversant concerning the various medications and thus, able to recognize and respond appropriately to indications of adverse effects by patients. For instance, the perception by clinicians of better safety standards caused the use of SSRIs replacing tricyclic medications regardless of having side effects on elderly patients. However, the implementation of new guidelines through the Medicare and Medicaid services improved the use of unnecessary medications as well as tapering of medication classes that included psychotropic medications.

In conclusion, it is of great significance as a nurse to ensure that patients especially older adults in nursing homes receive optimum nursing and medical care in relations to their mental health. In this case, there is need to improve recognition of psychiatric symptoms as well as reducing dependence on psychotropic medications. Additionally, nurses could opt for alternative treatment methods such as non-pharmacological interventions.

Case Study

Elizabeth Jefferies is a divorced 46-year-old mother of two children (Lily age 8 years and Felix age 10 years) and the daughter of two aging parents in the southeastern United States. She and her children have recently relocated from an urban neighborhood to a rural town to care for her parents, Robert and Susan. The move involved a job change for Elizabeth, a change in schools for the children, and an increased distance from the children’s father Chris. Robert is a 72-year-old Methodist minister who recently suffered a stroke, leaving him with diminished motor function of his left side and difficulty swallowing. Susan is 68 years old and suffers from fibromyalgia, limiting her ability to assist with the daily care of her husband. She has experienced an increase in generalized pain, difficulty sleeping, and worsening fatigue since her husband’s stroke.

Combining Nurse Leader with Advocacy

Academic nursing journal or a spontaneous blog of a nurse in real life, I get in touch with my nursing roots as much as I can. There is life is more than my current work and I like to absorb my brain with updates regularly. Since in my free time I still dedicate to do nursing-related enriching activities, I have to admit I lack a tremendous amount of pampering myself as a person outside of being a nurse. Being a nurse is a demanding task so it will help tremendously if I get to treat myself every once in a while. It is always a good way to relax those tired muscles and recharge batteries.

As for my reflective practice reference behaviors, I have always found working with nurses from different backgrounds a fulfilling experience. In fact, I used to have a high school dream of working as a nurse to a different country, perhaps in South America or in Africa, and try to extend my nursing care in its best form. I find that if you get along with people (whether patients or fellow healthcare team members), you will find living life a little bit easier, maybe because you find it easy to blend with others despite the huge differences in background, religions, ethnicity, and etc. I am constantly amazed by the cultural differences because along the way I learn a lot from the person.
