Case Study Legal – PD

Case SynopsisIn November 2014, the Residence Services department at MacEwan University in Alberta, Canada, needed to replace a residence assistant who was exiting midway through the academic year. The new hire would have one semester of work for the current academic year and, with good performance, was expected to return for two semesters of work in the following academic year. One of the qualified applicants had a distinguishable disability: she used a wheelchair. On the one hand, it would be easier for Residence Services to not hire her because of the various potential risks, concerns, or expected difficulties that could arise with her employment. The primary concern was her ability to respond effectively to emergency situations. A secondary concern was the impact on operational efficiency and the need to adapt work and staff routines to accommodate the use of a wheelchair. On the other hand, it was not legal to discriminate against the candidate for employment, and Residence Services valued inclusive hiring practices. The decision to hire or not hire this candidate needed to be made very soon.

Case Questions:

  1. What other options does Galloway have besides hiring or not hiring Benson?
  2. What changes or safeguards could be made in the selection process to ensure that future selection decisions are discrimination-proof?

Discussion Response 2

Please see below the discussion in response to the question and respond as a peer using 150 or more words.

Original Question:

(Explain why the entity relationship (ER) model is useful. How has it helped to produce a more structured relational database design environment?)

Peer Response:

The ER model is useful because it is a visual representation of entities and how they relate to each other. Entities can be people, objects, or concepts and how they relate to each other is by the interaction that takes place between them. The ER model has often been “…used to design or debug relational databases in the fields of software engineering, business information systems, education and research” (Lucidchart, n.d.). It helps immensely with the design and layout of databases for figuring out the structure of how they will be laid out and work and also helps identify any issues or things that may not add value to the database. There are also different models to utilize for this to include the Chen Model and Crows Foot.

In 1970, Peter Chen developed ER modeling for database design and with its standard layout and set of shapes for entities, attributes, and relationships made a more structured approach to ERD design (Lucidchart, n.d.). It presents the theoretical layout that is easily understood visually instead of trying to piece the text together in you mind in the same manner

Exercise 9, page 205. Just write out the recursive

1. (3 points) Exercise 9, page 205. Just write out the recursive method gcd; you aren’t

required to write or run a test program.

2. (3 points) Exercise 17, page 209.

3. (4 points) Draw a recursion tree for the call binarySearch(5, 0, 8). Use the

recursive version of the method found on p. 174 of your textbook.

Label each node of the recursion tree with the indices of the subarray being searched

(given by the parameters first and last). Assume the array values contains the

following:

[-2 1 3 5 7 12 18 20 23]

4. (2 points) How many total calls are made to binarySearch? What is the depth of

recursion for this call? Here depth of recursion = longest path in the recursion tree.

5. (4 points) In class we saw two ways to formulate the choose function, one with two

recursive calls, and another needing only one recursive calls. Write both versions (call

them choose1 and choose2, for the number of recursive calls) as static methods in a

class along with a main method for testing. For both, be sure to check the validity of the

arguments and throw IllegalArgumentException if invalid. Your test will prompt

the user for n and m and return the results of running both versions of choose.

Record the results of testing your code with arguments (4,2) and (6,4). Then test them for

(15,8) and (35,20).  On some computers the last call may take several minutes.  If any of

your answers are negative, explain why.

6. (2 points) Java provides the primitive type long for integral computations which cannot

be expressed using int.  Long integers hold values from more than 92 quintillion to less

than -92 quintillion.  Rewrite each choose method so that it returns value of type long.

Rerun each computation from the previous problem and record the results.

7. (2 points) How many total calls are made to choose2(6,4)? What is the depth of

recursion for this call? Use a recursion tree to answer this question (extra credit for

turning in a drawing of the tree).

8. (4 points) For each of the algorithms gcd, contains, binarySearch,

and choose2, say if they are tail recursive or not.

Information Security Compliance Audit—Standards and Frameworks

All posts must be a minimum of 250 words. APA reference. 100% original work. no plagiarism.

1. What advice does the FBI provide in protecting against computer fraud? Do you feel that the Government is doing a sufficient job in this area?

2. Define COBIT and it’s control objective.  Do you feel the framework is detailed enough to serve your organization?  Why or why not?

3. What are the components of a good policy framework? Provide an example of each of these components.

4. What is the Deming cycle approach? How does this approach help improve quality?

5. Why is it important for IT Auditors to know about the legal environment of information systems?

Practical Connection

At UC, it is a priority that students are provided with strong educational programs and courses that allow them to be servant-leaders in their disciplines and communities, linking research with practice and knowledge with ethical decision-making. This assignment is a written assignment where students will demonstrate how this course research has connected and put into practice within their own career.

Assignment:
Provide a reflection of at least 500 words (or 2 pages double spaced) of how the knowledge, skills, or theories of this course have been applied, or could be applied, in a practical manner to your current work environment. If you are not currently working, share times when you have or could observe these theories and knowledge could be applied to an employment opportunity in your field of study.

Requirements:

Provide a 500 word (or 2 pages double spaced) minimum reflection.

Use of proper APA formatting and citations. If supporting evidence from outside resources is used those must be properly cited.

Share a personal connection that identifies specific knowledge and theories from this course.

Demonstrate a connection to your current work environment. If you are not employed, demonstrate a connection to your desired work environment.

You should not, provide an overview of the assignments assigned in the course. The assignment asks that you reflect how the knowledge and skills obtained through meeting course objectives were applied or could be applied in the workplace.

Be sure to not self-plagiarize as this assignment is similar in multiple courses.

Imagine you are an Information Technology professional that has been at your job for 4 years. Your boss has just asked you to find a cloud based Data Warehouse colocation center that your company can use to house all of its data that comes in from all company information systems.

  1. Please search the web to find 2 Data Warehouse choices to present to your boss.
  2. Include the following: name of the data centers and web addresses.
  3. Include a list of main features that each one has.
  4. Include any other determining factors (pros/cons)
  5. In addition to this information, include a 1-2 paragraph business case of why you think each one would be a good fit for your company.
  6. Remember: you are trying to convince your boss to choose one of the options you have researched, so be clear, concise, convincing, and make it visually appealing.
