Application of Concepts from Caring Science 1&2 copies

summary: A theory can be used to guide practice.  This assignment is an exercise in supporting a clinical practice with theory and evidence.Directions: Identify an outcome of nursing practice in your area of practice that can be improved.  For example, if you work in home health, you may identify that throw rug use by fall risk patients is too prevalent.  You may be able to use the problem that inspired the theory concepts that you developed in week two. Identify the concept in Watson’s Theory of Caring that could represent or include the outcome.  In our example, the outcome would be the changes in self through the change in the patient’s floor covering practice. Identify a practice that can be changed or implemented that may influence the outcome. Identify the concept in Watson’s Theory of Caring that includes the practice.  In our example, the practice could be to improve the understanding of fall hazards through the engagement in a teaching-learning experience, one of Watson’s Caritas Processes. Identify exactly how these two concepts will be measured with their operational definitions. Develop a proposition between the two. Present your outcome in an APA formatted paper  meeting the University’s standards for a written assignment.Expectations

  • Length: 5 to 7 pages including title and reference pages
  • References: 3 to 10.  There should be enough to support the links between the concepts of the problem and the concepts of Watson’s Theory of Caring.

CRITICAL APPROVAL OF JEAN WATSON THEORY OF HUMAN CARING

Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring is a conceptual thread in the USU College of Nursing’s curriculum framework. The purpose of this assignment is to offer students the opportunity to be exposed to Human Caring Science while providing students with the skills of critical appraisal of evidence.

  1. Students will select one nursing research article that focuses on a study that used Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring as a theoretical framework.
  2. Students should use as a guide, an appropriate Rapid Critical Appraisal Checklist found in Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt (2019; pp. 708-722).
  3. The critiques are to be informal, although correct grammar, spelling, etc., are expected. The critique should include a brief description of the study that was reviewed and should address elements of the study relevant to critique.
  4. Students will provide a written critique on a critical appraisal of the elements relevant to the nature of the research study such as type of study, design, quality of the study; and rationale, as well as implications for practice and further research and/or evaluation.

The grade will be based on accuracy, level of content and structure of the document.

What can we do to improve healthcare

Over the weeks of this course we have covered a range of healthcare issues. Now, as we approach the last week of our course, please take a moment, step-back, and think about what we have learned.

It’s been quite a journey through a tremendous amount of material. I hope you have found it of interest and of value.

As you think about all this, your final challenge is to try and bring it all together in response to the following question:

How might the ways in which we produce, deliver, and pay for care be changed in order to increase access, improve quality, and the cost of healthcare services? This is a VERY BIG question that begs for a simple answer. But we should not be tempted by such simplicity. If the answer was simple, we more than likely would have already implemented it.

Rather, we need to dig through the different layers and dimensions of the US healthcare system to be able to see some of the underlying challenges, issues, barriers, and real opportunities that are part of the “big picture.”

So, from that big picture perspective, what would you change about the US healthcare system to make it better? Pick one aspect and support your decision with credible evidence. Provide the decision-making framework you applied to answer this question. Please include your evaluation of the likely unintended consequences of your idea.

Description

Points: 100 | Due Date: Week 3, Day 7 | CLO: 5 | Grade Category: Assignments

Assignment Prompt

The purpose of assignments Part 1 – Part 3 is to gradually guide the student in developing the signature assignment. The idea is for the student to take a stepwise approach to completing the signature assignment. The signature assignment will be broken up into three steps: STEP 1 – Introduction and Overview of the Problem; STEP 2 – Project Purpose Statement, Background & Significance and PICOt Formatted Clinical Project Question; and STEP 3 – Literature Review and Critical Appraisal of the Literature. The three steps, when completed, will be combined in the final Signature Assignment formal paper in Week 8.

This week’s assignment is STEP 1 – Introduction and Problem Statement.

First, the student will select a clinical question from the Approved List of PICOt/Clinical Questions or seek approval for a question from the course professor only for Nurse Educator and Health Care Leadership MSN majors who wish to tailor their research question to their specialized major. The student will select an approved topic from the list (or with faculty approval as previously stated) and will customize the question to meet his or her interest.

Next, the student will use the outline below and submit via a Word doc to the assignment link.

  1. Provide a title that conveys or describes the assignment.
  2. Introduction – Provide an introduction to your topic or project. The introduction gives the reader an accurate, concrete understanding what the project will cover and what can be gained from implementation of this project.
  3. Overview of the Problem – Provide a synopsis of the problem and some indication of why the problem is worth exploring or what contribution the proposed project is apt to make to practice.
  4. References – Cite references using APA 7th ed. Manual.

Expectations

  • Due: Monday, 11:59 pm PT
  • Format: Completed Word doc with references in APA 7th ed. format
  • File name: Save the file with Student First Name_Last Name_Part 1

Week 4 Disscussion NSG4074

Topic 2: Stigma Associated with Disease

Some vulnerable populations may have diseases, health impairments, and pregnancy that bring humiliation and predisposed judgment. Unfortunately, these health conditions can cause vulnerable populations to become ostracized by the general public.

  • What ways would you choose to function as an advocate for vulnerable populations?
  • Discuss the types of assistance you might provide to each of the following clients from a vulnerable population:
    • A 24-year-old pregnant woman who is currently homeless and unmarried
    • A 16-year-old girl who has run away from her foster home and who has an IV drug habit
    • An immigrant worker whose TB skin test just came back positive
    • An employed, married man who contracted Hepatitis B through a blood transfusion 30 years ago

Annotated bibliographies

Annotated bibliographies are used to organize and summarize research papers for future reference. In this class you will read several papers: one scientific article and several popular media articles about scientific topics. For this assignment you should read the articles, then write a short synopsis or summary of the major points in each article. Each summary should be approximately 1-2 paragraphs. This can be accomplished by writing a fairly brief description of the major sections in a scientific research article: introduction, methods, results, discussion/conclusion. While popular media articles are less focused on methods, they often have the other sections, although you may have to read carefully to find them. A full bibliographical reference should also be included for each article.

To receive full credit for this assignment you should read the following articles and provide a synopsis and full citation for each (pdfs of the articles can be found on Canvas):

1. A powerful new way to edit DNA. A. Pollack, The New York Times.

2. The CRISPR quandary. J. Kahn, The New York Times

3. Gene editing for ‘designer babies?’ Highly unlikely, scientists say. P. Belluck, The New York Times.

4. Factors that alter rumen microbial ecology. J. Russell and J. Rychlik, Science.

You may use either APA or MLA style for your citation, but be consistent and use one style for all citations. More information about proper citation can be found on the University libraries website: https://guides.lib.wayne.edu/c.php?g=939080&
