Topic: Risk Analysis and Capital Structuring

Deliverable Length: 6-8 pages of content excluding Information and Reference Pages

The board of directors of your for-profit hospital has been approached by a nonprofit hospital to consider a joint venture to take over their business resulting in a larger for-profit medical center status. You have been asked to construct a financial risk analysis for this conversion. Using course materials, including your text and the Internet, and principles of financial risk analysis, evaluate the considerations that a nonprofit hospital has in considering the conversion to a for-profit hospital.

Consider the following options in support of your decision: 

• Projected profit and loss statements
• Retention of estimates
• Selected cost of capital
• Other spreadsheets and calculations you feel are needed to support your decision 

Consider the following topics in your discussion:

• Key characteristics of nonprofit hospitals that differ from for-profit hospitals 
  • Include the characteristics required to maintain a nonprofit status. 
• The need for shifts in corporate structure required for survival in this environment, including safety net requirements and responsibilities
• Potential reasons driving both organizations and considerations between an outright merger verses a      corporate alliance or joint venture. 
• Assessment of the payer mix, financial benchmarks of nonprofit and for-profit hospitals
  • Consider uncompensated care burdens within the for-profit model
• Proffer a decision based on your analysis of whether the organization should convert, create a joint      venture, or decline the offer with rationale and justification.  

Your paper must include your financial information derived in your risk analysis as an appendix included after the Reference page.

Bi-weekly Practicum Journaling

Every two weeks, you will submit a reflective journal to the discussion forum for review by course faculty and your classmates. All are expected to engage and support one another by sharing these experiences in a supportive, constructive, and professional environment. Journaling is an active learning technique that is meant to enhance reflective practice (Blake, 2005). Reflective practice involves looking back over what has happened in the practice setting in an effort to improve performance or to encourage professional growth (Ruth-Sahd, 2003).

Your Weekly Practicum Journal is:

• A personal, introspective subjective account of your practicum experience and how your practicum experience relates to Healthy People 2020 and course objectives. Include events that occurred in your practicum experience, and be sure to describe your thoughts and feelings about those events. How did your perceptions change? What did you learn that was unexpected? Describe your thinking about your thoughts and feelings regarding the new learning you experienced.
• Connected to South University’s College of Nursing Conceptual Framework Pillars (Caring, Communication, Critical Thinking, Professionalism, and Holism).
• Connected to prior coursework and experiences through reflective analysis.
• Written in a scholarly, academic style using APA style format. Two or three sentences are not sufficient nor are daily logs/reports of activities.

Develop and submit a personal leadership philosophy that reflects what you think are characteristics of a good leader. Use the scholarly resources on leadership you selected to support your philosophy statement. Your personal leadership philosophy should include the following:

Understanding the work of others is critically important to new work. Contributions to the nursing body of knowledge can happen when you are able to analyze and articulate the efforts of previous research. Research analysis skills are therefore critical tools for your toolbox.

In this Assignment, you will locate relevant existing research. You also will analyze this research using a tool helpful for analysis.

To Prepare:

• Reflect on the strategies presented in the Resources this Module’s Learning Resources in support of locating and analyzing research.
• Use the Walden Library to identify and read one peer-reviewed research article focused on a topic in your specialty field that interests you.
• Review the article you selected and reflect on the professional practice use of theories/concepts described by the article.

The Assignment:

Using the “Module 4 | Part 4” section of your Academic Success and Professional Development Plan Template presented in the Resources, conduct an analysis of the elements of the research article you identified. Be sure to include the following:

• Your topic of interest.
• A correctly formatted APA citation of the article you selected, along with link or search details.
• Identify a professional practice use of the theories/concepts presented in the article.
• Analysis of the article using the “Research Analysis Matrix” section of the template
• Write a 1-paragraph justification stating whether you would recommend this article to inform professional practice.
• Write a 2- to 3-paragraph summary that you will add to your Academic Success and Professional Development Plan that includes the following:
  • Describe your approach to identifying and analyzing peer-reviewed research.
  • Identify at least two strategies that you would use that you found to be effective in finding peer-reviewed research.
  • Identify at least one resource you intend to use in the future to find peer-reviewed research.

• Review the Cameron and Turtle-Song (2002) article in this week’s  Learning Resources for guidance on writing case notes using the SOAP  format.

The Assignment

Part 1: Progress Note

Using the client from your Week 3 Assignment, address the following in a progress note (without violating HIPAA regulations):

• Treatment modality used and efficacy of approach 
• Progress and/or lack of progress toward the mutually agreed-upon  client goals (reference the Treatment plan—progress toward goals)
• Modification(s) of the treatment plan that were made based on progress/lack of progress
• Clinical impressions regarding diagnosis and/or symptoms
• Relevant psychosocial information or changes from original  assessment (i.e., marriage, separation/divorce, new relationships, move  to a new house/apartment, change of job, etc.)
• Safety issues 
• Clinical emergencies/actions taken 
• Medications used by the patient (even if the nurse psychotherapist was not the one prescribing them)
• Treatment compliance/lack of compliance
• Clinical consultations
• Collaboration with other professionals (i.e., phone consultations  with physicians, psychiatrists, marriage/family therapists, etc.)
• Therapist’s recommendations, including whether the client agreed to the recommendations
• Referrals made/reasons for making referrals 
• Termination/issues that are relevant to the termination process  (i.e., client informed of loss of insurance or refusal of insurance  company to pay for continued sessions)
• Issues related to consent and/or informed consent for treatment 
• Information concerning child abuse, and/or elder or dependent adult  abuse, including documentation as to where the abuse was reported
• Information reflecting the therapist’s exercise of clinical judgment

Note: Be sure to exclude any information that should not be found in a discoverable progress note.
 

Part 2: Privileged Note

Based  on this week’s readings, prepare a privileged psychotherapy note that  you would use to document your impressions of therapeutic  progress/therapy sessions for your client from the Week 3 Practicum  Assignment.

• The privileged note should include items that you would not typically include in a note as part of the clinical record. 
• Explain why the items you included in the privileged note would not be included in the client’s progress note.
• Explain whether your preceptor uses privileged notes, and if so,  describe the type of information he or she might include. If not,  explain why.

Create a PowerPoint presentation to explain why and how your company (The Widget Company) will increase diversity at all levels. You may create an assessment that measured the current climate, and determine what training is needed. This presentation is for the 10-member board of directors, but it may also be released to workers, at a later date, if approved.
