Case Assignment

For this assignment you will respond to questions regarding school health programs. Please answer these questions:

1. Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of school-based health programs. Be sure to distinguish the difference between a basic, expanded and comprehensive school health program.
2. List the 8 components of coordinated school health programs. How are they interconnected and why are they important.
3. Define the roles of Education and Public Health Departments. Should Public health departments provide primary medical care? How “bright” is the line between public health and personal health within the context of public school district? Do they or should they overlap?
4. Discuss the new directions of school-based health care services and the key programmatic characteristics of school-based health care services.
5. Generally discuss how the Healthy People 2020 goal to “Increase the quality, availability, and effectiveness of educational and community-based programs designed to prevent disease and improve health and quality of life” impacts the role of education and public health departments to work with the schools.

6. Your assignment will not be graded until you have submitted an Originality Report with a Similarity Index (SI) score <15% (excluding direct quotes, quoted assignment instructions, and references). Papers not meeting this requirement by the end of the session will receive a score of 0 (grade of F). Papers with a lower SI score may be returned for revisions. For example, if one paragraph accounting for only 10% of a paper is cut and pasted, the paper could be returned for revision, despite the low SI score. Stakeholders are the ones that play large roles in the organization’s performance and operations that affect the actions that take place within the organization. Stakeholders are vested entities that influence decisions and implement policies that use current evidence-based practice. Internal stakeholders can facilitate the implementation of a proposed change of practice. Multidisciplinary teams within medical units also play a role in the units’ infrastructure that care for patients, influencing changes in practice. If there is a need for a shift in culture and practice, the multidisciplinary team is the first step to create the change. Management is the next step in supporting a change in care practice, and buy-in from them can help further efforts to make a change. Leaders can also facilitate training and ongoing education to understand new evidence-based practices and implementation success of the capstone project.

Patients are external stakeholders, and when they receive excellent care based on current up to date evidence-based practice that decreases mortality and increases compliance. The community can offer support for change in care practices, making them aware of projects that can better their care and benefit them to help gain support for the projects’ success. Building a platform for introducing topics that can increase awareness of certain aspects of care that can be improved helps increase support and active engagement by all stakeholders. Providing many different skills, knowledge, and resources from stakeholders could assist with the capstone project implementation and secure their support.

 For this assignment, choose a research article related to nursing or medicine to critique.

• Articles used for one assignment can’t be used for the other assignments (students should find new research articles for each assignment).
• The selected articles should be original research articles. Review articles, meta-analysis, meta-synthesis, and systemic review should not be used.
• Mixed-methods studies should not be used.

Your critique should include the following:

Research Problem/Purpose

• State the problem clearly as it is presented in the report.
• Have the investigators placed the study problem within the context of existing knowledge?
• Will the study solve a problem relevant to nursing?
• State the purpose of the research.

Review of the Literature

• Identify the concepts explored in the literature review.
• Were the references current? If not, what do you think the reasons are?

Theoretical Framework

• Are the theoretical concepts defined and related to the research?
• Does the research draw solely on nursing theory or does it draw on theory from other disciplines?
• Is a theoretical framework stated in this research piece?
• If not, suggest one that might be suitable for the study.

Variables/Hypotheses/Questions/Assumptions

• What are the independent and dependent variables in this study?
• Are the operational definitions of the variables given? If so, are they concrete and measurable?
• Is the research question or the hypothesis stated? What is it?

Methodology

• What type of design (quantitative, qualitative, and type) was used in this study?
• Was inductive or deductive reasoning used in this study?
• State the sample size and study population, sampling method, and study setting.
• Did the investigator choose a probability or non-probability sample?
• State the type of reliability and the validity of the measurement tools.
• Were ethical considerations addressed?

Data Analysis

• What data analysis tool was used?
• How were the results presented in the study?
• Identify at least one (1) finding.

Summary/Conclusions, Implications, and Recommendations

• What are the strengths and limitations of the study?
• In terms of the findings, can the researcher generalize to other populations? Explain.
• Evaluate the findings and conclusions as to their significance for nursing.

The body of your paper should be 4–6 double-spaced pages plus a cover page and a reference page. The critique must be attached to the article and follow APA guidelines.

 Select the state where you plan to practice as a nurse practitioner and/or nurse leader and investigate the state’s policies on access to maternal health resources such as contraceptive care including abortion for women with and without health insurance coverage. Identify what are the state’s infant and maternal mortality rates and discuss the possible relationship between these factors.
