The United States is one of the remaining countries in the developed world that does not have a single-payer health care insurance system in place. With the future of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act being uncertain, we hear continuing discussion as to whether the United States could (and/or should) adopt a single-payer system. Could a single-payer system be possible, even though it is forecast to cost trillions of dollars? How would it affect health care costs, coverage networks, types of covered vs. noncovered services, patient waiting times (for appointments, testing, procedures, and surgeries), coinsurances, and (finally) our taxes? Would currently working employees be required to give up their existing coverage for what will be provided under the single-payer system?

Once you have read the assigned background readings, as well as completed some peer-reviewed research of your own, address the following:

  1. Describe an example of how a single-payer system (such as ‘Medicare For All’, as just one example) works in the United States.

Physician practices are a key component of the U.S. health care system. According to the text, a significant amount of revenue that the health care industry generates can be directly linked to the care that physicians provide for their patients. In addition, physicians in a medical practice add to this revenue stream by admitting patients to a hospital, prescribing prescription medication, ordering home health services and medical equipment, and referring their patients to other health care providers for care and treatment. Something in human nature causes us to start slacking off at our moment of greatest accomplishment. People tend to settle once they have achieved a little part of success and miss out on bigger success. People must continue to be sle motivated to continue to reach their goals and desires of success. John dedicated 20 years to Telco, and after 20 years, an underlying disease has affected his performance at work.  

John has not just worked at Telco for 20 years, he has dedicated 20 years of his life to Telco. Telco has seen John highs and his lows, his bad and his goods so they should be able to understand what John is going through. John has been diagnosed with Diabetes and it has impacted his ability to perform at work. However, we do not know what kind of job John has and how his job affects Telco and other employees. At the end of the day, most companies are a for profit company and any mistake or leave of absence may cause hardship to them. In the John situation, Telco would need to evaluate the situation and attempt to accommodate John without causing a financial hardship to Telco. In Atkins v. Salazar, a 2011 Fifth Circuit case, similar situation was presented, however, we do not know the extent of how John is being affected bedside his performance and absence, but more information should be collected and find a common ground before telco decides to fire John. In Atkins case, his accommodation to Salaza where his accommodations would push the NPS in a financial hardship resulting in a demotion to Atkins following that Atkins diabetes impaired his performance as a park ranger.

Before John is layed of and then he retaliates with filing a case under the ADA act, Telco must attempt to accommodate him to prevent him from being sued by John. In addition, If John decides no to co-operated and leaves the company willingly, then Telco will not be liable for his actions.

You are the Training Director for a newly created Internet provider, Interdependent Operations Company (IOC). IOC has locations in 152 cities, ranging from locations that have only one employee who works from home, to locations that have offices with 20-30 people. To create this business, IOC purchased another Internet service provider that was not profitable. The company’s inability to produce a profit was determined to be a result of improper training of the customer service staff and outdated methods for recording the information that the customer service staff collects. 

It is your job to design a training program for the customer service staff to use when potential customers call them on the toll-free phone line, or when customers are referred to a customer service representative as a follow-up to a sales call. IOC has maintained the customer service staff from the former company, but the employees in this department need to be trained to better manage customer calls and enter data collected from the customers.
