  2. Research/find a minimum at least four (4), preferably five (5) or more, different peer- reviewed articles on your topic from the University of the Cumberlands Library online business database. The article(s) must be relevant and from a peer-reviewed source. While you may use relevant articles from any time frame, current/published within the last five (5) years are preferred. Using literature that is irrelevant or unrelated to the chosen topic will result in a point reduction.
  3. Write a five (5) page double spaced paper in APA format discussing the findings on your specific topic in your own words. Note – paper length does not include cover page, abstract, or references page(s).

    4. Review of the Literature summarized in your own words. Note that this should not be a “copy and paste” of literature content, nor should this section be substantially filled with direct quotes from the article. A literature review is a summary of the major points and findings of each of the selected articles (with appropriate citations). Direct quotations should be used sparingly. Normally, this will be the largest section of your paper (this is not a requirement; just a general observation).
    5. Practical Application of the literature. Describe how your findings from the relevant research literature can shape, inform, and improve current business and professional practice related to your chosen topic.
    6. Conclusion in your own words
    7. References formatted according to APA style requirements

Deliverable 4 – Performance Improvement Plan

Competency

Appraise the workforce relations of an organization to ensure optimal performance.

Scenario

You are an HR Business Partner in a large electronics retailer. The VP of HR has recently implemented a new disciplinary process, which focuses more on performance improvement rather than automatic discipline and censure for behavior and performance issues. The VP of HR created a performance matrix to help guide managers to understand what types of disciplinary actions are appropriate for different infractions. The HR Business Partners have been instructed to use the matrix to coach line managers to better assess what type of disciplinary action should be taken for employee issues, with the use of a performance improvement plan whenever possible.

Your internal portfolio, as an HR Business Partner, includes the household machines division, which focuses on sales of washers and dryers, dishwashers, and other large home appliances. The sales manager of this division has requested assistance from HR in handling a performance problem. One of his employees is an innovative and energetic “star performer,” but becomes angry, defensive, and argumentative if the ideas, suggestions, and proposals he makes require changes or is not implemented. The sales manager has spoken to him once, but no changes have been observed. As the HR Business Partner prepare a coaching memo for the sales manager, which outlines which type of discipline the employee should receive as well as a performance improvement plan (PIP) for the employee.

Instructions

Prepare a coaching memo and a performance improvement plan (PIP), using the organization’s new discipline matrix, for the employee that:

  • Provides primary issue/overall concern.
  • Explains desired and actual performance.
  • Demonstrates the impact (the sound business reasons why the problem must be solved).
  • Demonstrates the consequences (the logical consequences the employee will face if he fails to correct the situation).
  • Provides attribution for credible sources used as an appendix to the PIP.

  • How does one recognize sexual harassment? Discuss the different types of sexual harassment and what is required to support a case of sexual harassment in that situation. discussion 1 performance review

Case Scenario

Mr. Barney, the CEO, has received your memo request to be considered for further leadership positions.  He has decided to put you to the test!  He assigns you to help his Director of Payroll, Loretta Cash with a problem.

You walk over to Payroll and visit Loretta.  She is visibly upset.  She has just received her annual performance review from her manager.  This is a 6-month review, as Loretta was recently assigned to this role after working with great success for 10 years in another area of the Accounting Department.  As part of this review, her manager interviewed the six members of the Payroll Department, who all answer to Loretta. Loretta shares with you some of their comments:

“Loretta marched in here thinking she knows everything.  She doesn’t want to listen to any of our ideas.  It’s her way or the highway.”

“We really don’t know Loretta all that well.  She keeps to herself…except of course when payroll deadlines are due, and then she’s all over our backs.”

“She acts as if she is perfect.  I’m scared of getting yelled at when I make a mistake.”

“Most times, Loretta is fine, but when we have a deadline she micromanages us.  I literally dread coming in to work on days payroll is due because I know Loretta will be watching over us like a hawk.”

Answer the following questions, and support your answers with the course materials:

  1. What is the root cause of Loretta’s problem?
  2. List three specific recommendations that Loretta can do today to turn this situation around.  Make sure the three recommendations are actionable (in other words, Loretta can take your advice and put it into practice immediately) and specific (in other words, not too general that it cannot be easily understood). For example, “improve communication skills” is not actionable today, and too general to be clearly understood.  However, “give immediate feedback to demonstrate she is actively listening” can be put into practice today and is specific enough to be understood. (Do not use this example in your answer!).

Completing the Discussion

  • Read the grading rubric for the project.  Use the grading rubric while completing the project to ensure all requirements are met that will lead to the highest possible grade.
  • Third person writing is required.  Third person means that there are no words such as “I, me, my, we, or us” (first person writing), nor is there use of “you or your” (second person writing).  If uncertain how to write in the third person, view this link: http://www.quickanddirtytips.com/education/grammar/first-second-and-third-person.
  • Contractions are not used in business writing, so do not use them.
  • Paraphrase and do not use direct quotation marks.  Paraphrase means you do not use more than four consecutive words from a source document, but put a passage from a source document into your own words and attribute the passage to the source document.  Not using direct quotation marks means that there should be no passages with quotation marks and instead the source material is paraphrased as stated above.
  • Provide the page or paragraph number when they are applicable to in-text citations.  Note that a reference within a reference list cannot exist without an associated in-text citation and vice versa.
  • You may only use the course material from the classroom.  You may not use books or any resource from the Internet.s

Thought Responses

Please respond to each prompt in at least 100 words. These are thought responses and will require no references, just your thoughts on the prompts.

Prompt 1:

When selecting a candidate for a position, the qualities I am searching for rather in-person or reviewing their resume are few things.

“Confident” hires showcase their abilities and talents during the interview process, as they normally hit the ground running after the hiring process.

Hiring people with “Positive Attitude” will bring an upbeat outlook and productive working environment. They will likely to approach the job with a willingness attitude delivers results.

“Team Player” is a must because there is no I in teams. I need employees who are comfortable working as a group on separate project and still able to contributing on an individual level, they normally the best employees.

“Strong Work Ethic” goes right alone “Dependable Employees” because they both coincide with one another. By having strong work ethic often set high goals for themselves that are achievable and staying committed defines reliable behavior and display dependable employees.

“Good Communicator” can communicate effectively with colleagues which is a good skill not only because you are able to get your points across, but also you are capable of carefully to listening and follow directions. I personally tend to favor toward candidates good listing skills and opened to engaging with different communication styles.

Prompt 2:

As one of the leading supervisors in my previous command, I had a pleasure experiencing different tasks such as evaluating and interviewing personnel. Some of the key concepts I have learned is to communicate with other leaders and discuss who’s the strongest candidate. I’ve come to know how the process and selection of work. The first thing we conduct is to separate the experience applicants from a level of knowledge application. In my opinion, this is a great way to select the appropriate personnel for any case. Therefore, when I evaluate the applicant profile, I examined their skills, their prior experience, and the time with their previous job. I believe these characteristics speaks a lot of volume about the person because of how much dedicated to their work.

For an in-person interview, I think this process could be deceitful because it does not show the applicants’ true character. However, I think if personnel care enough to show in the interview on time, put on proper attire, and answer the questions with good manners. It shows their reliability and communication skills.
