Unit 1 Assignment: Trends and Shortage Analysis

Before you begin your Assignment, watch a brief video introduction.

Journal/Newspaper Analysis Activity: This analysis-based activity will help students apply the concepts of critical thinking to the analysis of source material. Conduct thorough research to find three articles related to trends in the healthcare workforce and causes of workforce shortage. Create an APA formatted Annotated Bibliography for the three articles selected. The Annotated Bibliography should summarize and analyze the articles in your own words. Each article annotation should be at least 150 words and include the article reference in APA format.

Use the following example as a guide for your submission:

Reference: Brewer, R., Joly, B. M., Mason, M., Tews, D., & Thielen, L. (2007, August). Lessons learned from the multistate learning collaborative. Journal of Public Health Management and Practice, 388–394.

Annotation: This article adds to the research regarding public health collaborations by addresses two major concepts. Recent federal incentives demonstrated government support for quality initiatives, prompting coordinated advances in public health quality improvement processes (Brewer, Joly, Mason, Tews, & Thielen, 2007). Best practices in relations to public health practices and achievement of accreditation were developed through guiding principles of engagement and collaboration (Brewer et al., 2007). The case studies titled Building a QI Culture in Minnesota’s Local Public Health Departments and South Carolina’s Application of the Institute of Healthcare Improvement’s Model for QI in Public Health served as process models for future collaborative initiatives. Focus was given to engagement in public health quality improvement activities. This article examined collaborative framework, specific policies and promising future practices in the area of quality improvement in public health. The researchers prompted future research in project sustainability and the development of public health standardized practices for quality improvement.

Legal Considerations in I/O Psychology

In 2017, a pregnant Walmart employee who worked as a packer at a distribution center was struggling with morning sickness and asked for a break from some of her duties. Her supervisor responded that she would need a doctor’s note. Consequently, the woman obtained a note from her doctor that said she was to avoid heavy lifting and gave it to her supervisor. In turn, her supervisor referred her to Human Resources. A Human Resources employee informed her that she could not return to work until after she gave birth because she was a “liability,” and that she would have to apply for unpaid leave to keep her job. Did Walmart discriminate against this employee?

In the United States, there are many anti-discrimination laws; yet, as the Walmart example shows, discrimination continues to be a problem in the workplace. For this Assignment, you will examine the role of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) in enforcing anti-discrimination laws. You will also consider what steps you would take to ensure equity in the workplace as an I/O psychology practitioner.

To Prepare:
  • Read Chapter 3 in the Aamodt text, Industrial/Organizational Psychology: An Applied Approach, and “Title VII” of The Civil Rights Act of 1964.
  • Identify unlawful employment practices and anti-discrimination laws.
  • Consider the role of the EEOC in addressing unlawful employment practices.
  • Think about the best practices you would apply as an I/O psychology practitioner to prevent discrimination and ensure equity in the workplace.

By Day 7 of Week 10

Submit a 3–4-page paper that addresses the following questions. Your paper should follow APA style, be double-spaced with one-inch margins, and include a title page and reference list.

  • Describe the role of the EEOC in the practice of I/O psychology and three different laws that are enforced by the EEOC.
  • Describe two different types of discrimination prohibited by the laws enforced by EEOC and at least three best practices you would suggest for ensuring equity in the workplace.
  • Suppose you find yourself in an elevator with the CEO of a Fortune 500 company that you admire greatly. You strike up a casual conversation that suddenly turns to the topic of discrimination in the workplace, and you quickly realize that the CEO has no understanding of I/O psychology or I/O psychologists’ roles in addressing these concerns. One day you hope to begin your I/O career at this company or one similar to it. Therefore, you decide to give a quick elevator speech on I/O psychology and its role in best practices to address discrimination and inequity in the workplace. What would you say?

need two discussion questions 150 word max each w/reference

Effective managers stay abreast of current HR topics.

Stress as a component of workplace efficiency.

Week 4 Brainstorming Discussions

Must post first.

Topic: Stress as a component of workplace efficiency.

The CEO of VMI is a confessed workaholic. In a recent HR interview with Chinn, he lays out his personal conflict of demanding employees to work long hours as he does. He also is conflicted with the need to be open for business all the time due to its international markets. He is aware that his own Chinese cultural heritage influences his work practices. In China, the issue of personal time is not a concern. Workers do what is expected of them. Chinn knows this is not true in many western companies and especially in the southern states of America. As the newest set of management employees, Chinn wants you to examine this issue and make recommendations on how to deal with conflicting cultural expectations. What demands should VMI place upon its employees?

Stress at the workplace is a constant problem especially since technology has placed the worker in a 24/7 work environment. Use the articles listed below and your required learning materials from our week 4-course content to address this specifically for the circumstances of VMI.

Why Work stress is Bad for Your Relationships

Whither the Ping-pong Table? Which Perks Matter Most to Employees

What is the future of office spaces?

Directions:

1. By FRIDAY, complete the following:

Preparation: It is necessary to read the articles listed above as well as those in your classroom materials. This assignment cannot be completed without required learning materials, in particular the articles on cultural values and Geert Hofstede’s website.

Orientation/perspective: Continuing on with our scenario, you are a newly-hired manager not yet placed into a permanent assignment. Since week 1, you and Chinn have been talking about your vision for VMI’s future as given in last week’s assignments. Ultimately, you are convinced that the future VMI needs to be cognizant of the changing workplace while embarking upon VMI’s further international expansion, all under the umbrella of developing a learning organization culture to support this.

Deliverable: Once prepared, you will create a 2-page single-spaced report for President Chinn on the topic of the new modern workplace. In this report, include the following:

  • Chinn has a sense of cultural differences between his own heritage and that of VMI. Explain to him your understanding of these differences and how these may be underlying his observations.
  • Share with him your knowledge of workplace stress: its effects upon the employee, the idea of work and family life balance, differing cultural and generational views on this, and ways that organizations address it.
  • Enlighten him as to the difference of an engaged vs. ‘happy’ employee, with that difference expressed in effects upon specific types of performance and commitment. (As we have had readings explaining engagement every week, you need to express your own understanding of this and not paraphrase an article).
  • Your explanations should indicate that you understand typical pitfalls, misunderstandings, and misperceptions in cross-cultural communications and age-cohort attitudes.
  • With an understanding of the above, include specific and clear recommendations of addressing this within VMI.

The above are not distinct questions to be answered. Rather, you are to formulate your own report (2 pages, single-spaced), structuring your own points in a conversation with your reader (Chinn) that convinces him of its importance. Your report should incorporate key concerns and knowledge that has been expressed in our readings this week while also tying in your knowledge gained from past weeks (all cited). In order to accomplish this, your report must be focused on VMI’s situation, the type of work they perform, and how to carry forward their excellence and familial culture. Do not pitch ideas from sources that do not apply to VMI’s circumstances.

You must use course material to support your initial and final reports as well as APA in-text citations with a reference list

USE AND ROLE OF HEALTH CARE INFORMATION SYSTEMS

Your specific assignment for this module is to select a health care organization for your project and have it approved by your professor. You may consider any health care organization as long as you have enough access to the organization and/or level of understanding of that organization necessary to complete the assignment.

Note: You will not be asked to reveal any proprietary or confidential information in your reports. In addition, there are several health care organizations that do a fantastic job of publicly disclosing their health information infrastructure in an online format such as: https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/the_johns_hopkins_hospital/ . If you don’t have direct access to a health care organization, you can use one of the health care organizations that provides its health information infrastructure online.

Accordingly, your selected health care organization can be:

  • The organization for which you work.
  • A health care organization for which a friend or relative works. You must be able to access information concerning this organization that is relevant to your SLP assignments.
  • A local health care organization that is willing to share insight about how it manages health information.
  • Any health care organization that makes public its approach to health information management, operations, and organizational structure.

Provide a 7- to 10-slide (not including title slide and reference slides) PowerPoint presentation on the health care organization you have selected. Provide a brief overview of the health care organization. Next, discuss the types of health care information systems the organization uses (i.e., EHR, clinical decision support, patient portals, etc.). Finally, close with describing how these systems impact patient outcomes, quality and/or safety.

SLP Assignment Expectations

  1. Submit a 7- to 10-slide (not including title slide and reference slides) PowerPoint presentation on the health care organization you have selected.
  2. Slides should discuss: overview of the health care organization; types of health care information system the organization uses; and how these systems impact patient outcomes, quality, and/or safety.
  3. Provide speaker notes to support your slides.
  4. Provide references from at least 3 scholarly articles (peer-reviewed) and citations. Do not include information from non-scholarly materials such as wikis, encyclopedias, or www.freearticles.com (or similar websites). Use the following link for additional information on how to recognize peer-reviewed journals: http://www.angelo.edu/services/library/handouts/peerrev.php.
  5. For additional information on reliability of sources, review the following source:
Georgetown University Library. (n.d.). Evaluating internet resources. Retrieved from https://www.library.georgetown.edu/tutorials/research-guides/evaluating-internet-content
  6. Your response should incorporate the outcomes of the module with the requirements of this assignment and will be graded according to the rubric.
