research articles (no older than five years) on using technology to prevent medical malpractices. Next, discuss the overall manner in which using technology can help prevent malpractices. Speculate on the most damaging consequences of a malpractice case on a physician practice. Support your rationale.

Practical Application and Research Skills

Read the article “Adult Education and the Social Media Revolution” located in the e-reserves section of the course under “Course Resources.” Pay particular attention to the references the article authors make to the works of others.

Every citation within this article is essentially a head nod to other authors who have written about the same or similar topics. Were they all in the same room, you could imagine the authors of this article pointing to or calling out those other authors while speaking. This is what we mean when we refer to research and writing as one big conversation, with all of the participants listening and responding to one another.

In a discussion post, point to an example from this article and explain how the authors do one of the following:

  • refer to another work in order to give legitimacy to their own point;
  • refer to another work in order to build upon the ideas of others; or
  • refer to another work in order to challenge that work.

If you select “refer to another work in order to give legitimacy to their own point,” first describe what the authors’ point is, then describe how the cited article supports that point.

If you select “refer to another work in order to build upon the ideas of others,” first describe what the ideas are, then describe how the authors build upon those ideas.

If you select “refer to another work in order to challenge that work”, first describe what is being challenged, then describe how the authors are challenging the cited work.

Then, give an example from your own life in which you rely upon the work of others to complete a task or accomplish a goal. (This example might be from your workplace, community, or academic life.)

EEOC (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission) and Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act

Human Resources Management

12-point font, Times New Roman, 1-inch margins on all sides, double-spacing.

Use at least two (2) quality academic resources in this assignment. You may reference any information from the class textbook, chapters 1-8 in your answers and discussions. Format: APA version 7.

Class textbook: Human Resources Management. Author: Valentine; Meglich; Mathis; Jackson. Publisher: Pearson. Edition: 16th. ISBN: 978-0357033852

Write a 2-page paper to discuss the following:

1. Some Americans identify themselves as being lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. While EEOC contends that sexual orientation and gender identity fall under the category of “sex” and are protected by Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. As a HR manager you may encounter these groups who identify as such and since there are court rulings that conflict as to whether they can be legally protected; such as offering benefits to same sex spouses; giving employees paid time off for those who are undergoing gender transition surgery and therapy, and the use of gender neutral bathrooms, where individuals choose bathrooms based on their gender identity. How do you keep in step with the situations and challenges above as a HR manager?

Human Resources

Look at the Conceptual Model of HR.  Choose one area you find interesting.  Based on your own experiences and readings, what would you like to see happen in that area?  For instance, in Total Rewards/Compensation, maybe you’d like to have paid family medical leave.  In performance management, perhaps you would like to have a particular type of appraisal process.  Or, if you’re looking at employee relations, maybe you’d like to adopt a teleworking policy at an organization.  Maybe you see a change in the labor pool, law, or technology that will impact your chosen HR area and you want to address how such change will be incorporated.

Once you’ve identified a specific area to explore, ask:  If I had to propose this idea to executive management, how could I address the pro vs. con questions:

–How might it impact a hypothetical organization’s strategic direction and operations? Why would an organization want or not want to do this?

–How might it impact employees? Why would employees want or not want this?

–What impact would it have on other parts of the HR system?  Would other dimensions of HR need to change in order for my proposal to work?  What support might be needed from the other HR areas?  For instance, would we have to pay more, revise job descriptions, train staff, or lay-off people?

–How would we measure whether my proposed idea succeeded?

–What are real organizations doing about this?  Give at least one specific, referenced example.

When answering the content questions, be sure:

____ The work is original. Remember that you may not submit work that was created for any other class, including a previous semester of HRMD 610. This was part of the Academic Integrity Pledge you signed at the beginning of the term. The professor reserves the right to submit student papers to determine the originality percentage at his or her discretion. A good rule of thumb is that no more than 20% of a paper should be from direct quotes.

_____ The content is substantial and represents a significant literature review. In other words, the material extends substantially beyond the course readings. The issues discussed are key facets of the topic.

_____ Most of the references represent scholarly sources. Plan to use 8-12 sources for the paper. (Use UMGC’s library. The librarians are very helpful.)

_____ Since they are not vetted, commercial websites (.com) are not used unless the reason is to report the organization’s own policies or strategies as an example to illustrate a point.

_____ Because the HRM field has been changing rapidly in the last few decades, sources published prior to 2009 should be avoided, except when some brief history of the topic is necessary.

_____Points are well supported with logic, data, and/or examples.

_____Conclusions demonstrate integrative, critical thinking.

Presentation (15% of the assignment value)

_____The introduction tells the reader the purpose of the research and the agenda for the paper. (Do NOT use an abstract.)

_____ Special terms are defined.

_____Points are logically sequenced; the paper is well-organized.

_____The summary recaps the key points and provides psychological closure to the discussion.

_____Technical aspects of writing (i.e., grammar, sentence structure, and spelling) are correct.

_____Academic style (i.e., appropriate diction, clarity, smooth transitions, and an audience-oriented approach) is demonstrated. Note: This is a research paper, thus please do not:

o  Write in the 1st or 2nd person (I, me, my, we, us, you, your, our, etc.)

o  Share personal stories or workplace situations

o  Express your beliefs, feelings, or opinions on the subject

_____The body of the paper is 8 double-spaced pages

_____ A maximum of one bulleted list is used, if needed.

_____Citations are given for non-original material, using APA format for the in-text citation as well as the reference list.

Administrative Preparation

_____The paper is posted by the deadline in the proper place, using a Word file format. Per the syllabus, a grade penalty can apply if the document is late.

_____ An abstract page is not used.

_____Headers and footers are not used. (They can make it difficult to provide feedback.)

_____A 12-point font is used, and margins are reasonable.

_____Pages are numbered.

_____ The title page, the body, and the reference listing are not followed by any other appendices.

Briefing Memo

Various officials have a social media presence and appear on local radio or host a local podcast. For this assignment, you will prepare a briefing memo with talking points that are focused on a risk management or hazard mitigation message about your community. The audience you are preparing your briefing material for consists of elected officials who do not have subject matter expertise.

Include the elements listed below in your briefing memo.

  • Include the risk or hazard to the community, and provide three bullets addressing the primary message that you want to share about the hazard or risk.
  • Provide a brief critique of the risk or hazard communication tools and existing strategies that are being used in your community.
  • Identify the action that the message receiver should take to reduce the risk.
  • Include two samples of what officials would say in a Twitter or social media post.
  • Provide two questions and answers.
  • Include contact information on how the receivers can gain more information or actively participate.
  • Provide notes on lessons learned or best practices. For instance, you might provide a warning about being truthful in front of the media, you might share an instance where being truthful in the media went wrong, or you might show the potential repercussions that being untruthful can have on the information system.

Discussion

Cultural Awareness – Techniques and Interventions

Sue (2010) states, “Do not invalidate the experiential realities of diverse groups in our society. Be aware that privilege and power oftentimes make it difficult to see the perspectives of those who experience discrimination and prejudice in their day-to-day lives” (p. 60).

Consider Thomas and Schwarzbaum (2017) discussion of “Techniques and Interventions” and “Countertransference” in Chapters 13 and 16. Given Sue’s directive, what technique or intervention might you adopt in practice with a Muslim client or community and LBGT client or community? What countertransference issues may you confront in yourself?
