Application: Responding Organizations

The Stafford Act specifically points to national agencies’ involvement in crisis responding. These agencies include the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army along with others. The National Organization for Victim Assistance (NOVA) is one of the oldest crisis response agencies; it was originally established to aid crime victims. Professionals at responding organizations have a number of intervention models available to them. Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD) is a model that has been subject to some criticism because the usefulness of a debriefing or a reliving of a crisis is not always appropriate or helpful. More recently, Psychological First Aid was developed by the National Center for PTSD and the National Child Traumatic Stress Network as an evidence-informed modular approach for intervening with children, adolescents, adults, and families in the immediate aftermath of disaster and terrorism. In this Application Assignment, you explore both responding organizations and the crisis intervention models they employ.

To prepare for this assignment:

  • Review Chapters 13 and 17 in your course text, Crisis Intervention Strategies, and focus on which types of agencies or organizations would be helpful during a disaster/crisis.
  • Review the article, “Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act, as amended, and Related Authorities,” paying particular attention to the sections describing response teams and relief organizations.
  • Review the article, “In the Wake of Hurricane Katrina: Delivering Crisis Mental Health Services to Host Communities,” focusing on multicultural lessons learned. Think about how you would address those using various models of crisis management.
  • Review the article, “Preparation, Action, Recovery: A Conceptual Framework for Counselor Preparation and Response in Client Crises,” and pay attention to phases of crisis reactions and interventions.
  • Review the article, “Toward a Positive Perspective on Violence Preventions in Schools: Building Connections,” and think about which violence-prevention models would work best with children.
  • Research crisis management organizations’ crisis-intervention models, such as the American Red Cross’s model, and think about how they compare with each other.
  • Review the American Red Cross model and select an additional model with which to compare it in this Assignment.
  • Think about the recommendations you might make to counselors about choosing a crisis-intervention model.

The assignment: (3-5 pages)

  • Briefly describe the second organization you chose (the organization other than the Red Cross).
  • Explain the similarities and differences between the American Red Cross model and the other one you selected in terms of their elements and applications.

Step 1: Case Scenario

Read the following case first; then proceed to the next steps.

You work at a research lab and are 1 of the 6 researchers. Philip, a well-known and highly respected scientist in the lab has offered a theory that the cholesterol in eggs can have serious negative health effects on children. He cites 5 case studies done in different regions of the country over a two-year period and all studies suggest that negative health issues can be linked to egg consumption. His presentation is very compelling and the research lab has been offered significant amounts of government grant money to promote the findings of the cholesterol study.

The lab goes forward with the cholesterol research and assigns the other 5 researchers the task of furthering the study. After one year of research and much economic success for everyone at the research lab, a meeting is convened to assess the progress of the program. At this meeting, Rose, a second scientist with a long history of field research experience offers the theory that while there could be a relational effect of the cholesterol in eggs to children, she argues that there is no causal relationship and these findings should be published. The group is stunned as no one has ever challenged Philip’s work and his previous studies on other areas have all been accepted by the scientific community. Rose is excoriated by the group and is told by the research lab that Philip’s reputation speaks for itself and her study is not credible and will not be pursued. Two years later, a rival lab proves Rose’s theory and Philp’s research lab loses all government funding.

Step 2: Reflection Part

Ask yourself:

  • How can it be that a group of intelligent, experienced researchers would not explore the possibility of another theory in their study?
  • What is the importance of dissenting opinions?
  • Do I listen to and fully understand the point of view of the person expressing a dissenting opinion, especially if that person is the sole voice in the room.
  • Do I arrive at my opinion without sufficient critical analysis?
  • Am I basing my position on assumptions that I presume to be true, but that perhaps are not sufficiently tested or researched?

After you have thought through your position on this scenario, apply your thinking to this week’s philosophers and complete Step 3 – the writing part of this assignment.

Step 3: Writing Part

In 2-3 pages, explain how Locke and Rousseau might respond to this case of the research lab and groupthink if they were confronted with this situation. How might they explain majority rule and the social contract to illustrate their philosophy in dealing with groupthink? Support your analysis with quotes or paraphrases from the philosophers. Cost Comparison of Web Conferencing

The two owners of Spinner Media Services Inc. wanted to cut travel costs and productivity losses (wasted time) and maintain the benefits of person-to-person collaboration. They decided to use Web conferencing internally for collaboration and externally for sales demonstrations to customers. Their two options were (1) a pay-per-use basis or (2) a per user licensing plan based on the number of seats or participants. The decision would depend on cost comparisons based on these data estimates:

  • Approximately 400 meetings per year
  • An average of 12 participants per meeting
  • Each meeting lasting about one hour, which takes into consideration the need to get the meeting set up at least 15 minutes in advance and meeting for 45 minutes
  • 250 unique participants, consisting of 50 employees and 200 customers
  1. Research the costs of a pay-per-use plan vs. a per user licensing plan based on the number of seats or participants for Microsoft’s Zoom and Cisco’s WebEx. Or evaluate two other pieces of web-based meeting software. Precise cost comparisons are difficult because there are so many variables, but a general cost analysis between Zoom and WebEx or other software is feasible.
  2. Design a spreadsheet that shows cost comparisons of the vendors’ licensing options and the pay-per-use option using the data estimates.
  3. Identify other criteria that should be taken into account when making such a decision (for example, vendor support or the ability to integrate with Outlook).
  4. Based on your analysis, make a fully documented recommendation to the owners.

Prepare an Excel spreadsheet that fulfills the criteria for this SLP assignment. Be sure to use formulas and graphs within Excel so they can be reviewed. In a Word document, interpret the meaning of your analytical findings from the spreadsheet. The Word document should present the results to the owners of Spinner Media Services. Use analytics and graphs in your report and then describe the results. Remember you can copy spreadsheets and graphs into Word but you need to upload both the Word document and the Excel document to the SLP drop box.

An action plan is a written strategy used to achieve outlined goals. For the purposes of this assignment, the action plan will be created using PowerPoint. An action plan includes the components listed below, and you may refer to page 237 in the textbook for additional guidance.

  1. State the goal, which should identify what training content will be used and how it will be used.
    1. The goal for this action plan is to assist managers with identifying how performance appraisals are used to demonstrate the success of training efforts.
  2. Include the strategies for reaching the goal including what the trainee must do, what resources will be needed, and the type of support from managers and peers that will be necessary.
  3. Include the strategies for receiving the feedback, which will be used to demonstrate the success of the training efforts.
  4. Define the expected assessment results and how the results can be used to improve training.

After the title slide, begin your action plan by stating the goal. Next, identify at least three strategies for reaching the goal. Briefly explain your chosen strategies with supporting data in the speaker notes section of the PowerPoint presentation. For the third part of the action plan, develop a 10-question survey that could be used to demonstrate the success of the plan. Conclude your action plan with a summary of the expected results and how the manager could use them to improve training.

This action plan should contain at least 12 slides. You must use at least two sources with one being the textbook and the other being academic in nature from any database within the CSU Online Library. Be sure to cite and reference sources using proper APA style.

Here are some general guidelines to follow when preparing your PowerPoint presentation.

  • Design your presentation with the back of the room in mind. It is important that everyone can easily see and read the content.
  • Select a professional-looking slide design appropriate for the presentation and audience.
  • White text on a dark background is the easiest for the audience to see.
  • Use a large font size.
  • Use color and graphics when appropriate. Illustrations should relate to the content being discussed. Be creative.
  • Follow the 6 x 6 rule (i.e., use no more than six lines per slide and no more than six words per line).
  • Utilize the speaker notes function to add your talking points.
  • Bullet points work best on the slides.
  • Add slide transitions to enhance the audience’s experience.
