Progress, Results, and Finalizing the HR Project

Your HR project to develop a centralized model of delivering HR  services has progressed through very critical stages of the project thus  far. It is now time to present actionable, decision-making information  to project leaders. This can be best accomplished when projects have  been successfully managed, are devoid of any major risks, and have been  properly closed out and finalized.

Write a 5–6 page paper in which you:

  1. Explain what it means to successfully direct and manage  project work, and identify and discuss 3–4 strategies you might use to  manage and sustain progress in your HR project. Be specific.
  2. Identify and discuss a minimum of three strategies that could  be used to address and resolve any risks within the control of the  project. Hint: See Exhibit 14.5 in the textbook. Is any one of the  strategies you selected more important than the others? Why?
  3. Describe 2–3 actions a project manager may take as they begin  to close out the project. Be sure to justify using the actions you  discuss.

Write a research paper in APA 6th style

Paper #1 Requirements: A  “career path” in a given occupation can be defined as a series of  increasingly responsible and demanding “jobs,” where at least some of  those jobs are prerequisites for one another, like prerequisites for  college courses.  When we think of professional careers, we often think of progressions like “Jr. Accountant, Accountant, Financial Analyst,  Accounting Manager, Division Comptroller, CFO.”

Smart companies arrange step-wise  progressions for non-exempt (hourly paid, typically non-degreed)  employees in order to retain them over time.  For example, an employee of a residential moving company might go through the following sequence of positions: Loader B, Loader A, Lead Loader, Truck Driver, and  Project Coordinator, where each job requires the expertise gained in its  predecessor.  You should go into LIRN and search for at least a couple  of articles that treat these kinds of “job families” for non-exempt (or  “hourly”) employees.

When companies create job families, they are said to have “internal labor markets,” which means that, aside  from an entry-level position, which can be filled “off the street,”  recruitment for the higher-level jobs is almost always done within the company.

Deliverables

Once you have done your research and reflected upon this matter, please address the following questions:

  1. a. What are the advantages to a company of having such job families?
  2. b. Do you believe that, over the long term, job families are good for profits, or not? Why?
  3. c. What are the advantages to the employees? Are there disadvantages to the employees that you can think of?
  4. d. Overall, why would you recommend (or not recommend) the use of job families?

Use the required reading, the  lectures, and the sources cited in the lectures to justify your  position, along with additional research you have done.

Paper Writing Requirements

Please be sure to address the following requirements when completing your papers:

  • The cover page and reference page/s are not included in the page requirement or word count. These should be in addition to paper page count requirements.
  • Papers need to be formatted in proper APA 6th Edition style.
  • Each paper requires a minimum of at least three outside peer-reviewed sources for your references.
    • Acceptable/credible sources include: Academic journals and books, industry journals, and the class textbook. You could also use credible business website sources in addition to the peer-reviewed required sources, but avoid Wikipedia and Google. These are academic papers that need to include scholarly research.

A New Aptitude Test

Your employer, C. Manufacturing Company (CMC), has just developed a new aptitude test. CMC believes it will accurately predict the future performance of new sales reps. (The company employees over 200 sales representatives and is planning to double this number next year, so this test is very important to the company.) The challenge is that it takes a new sales representative about 2 years to come up to speed on performance. For this discussion, describe how you could validate this new aptitude test so that meaningful data will be available after the first 50 new sales representatives are hired (in about 6 months). Why would you use this method for validating this test

Option #1: Develop Applications Relative to Course Objectives

Option #1: Develop Applications Relative to Course Objectives

As part of successfully completing this course, you should be able to master the eight course objectives:

  1. Demonstrate the need for project management metrics.
  2. Establish the importance of metrics in effective management of time, cost, and scope.
  3. Apply the knowledge of project metrics to identify the key characteristics of properly defined metrics.
  4. Characterize Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) as used in metric-driven project management.
  5. Apply value-based project management metrics as important in selecting the right metrics.
  6. Explore project performance dashboards including designs, use, and limitations.
  7. Explore the applications of visual project management tools, including project performance dashboards.
  8. Create proper performance indicators for application in measurement-driven project management.

In this portfolio project, you are to show your mastery of the eight course objectives at a master’s level. You are to write a paper that covers each of the eight topics.

Notice that each objective is written with a verb as the first word to show some action that students must achieve for success in this class. Verbs like “demonstrate,” “apply,” and “create” require that the student takes some action on a project to satisfy the requirement. You should find a project to use in this portfolio where you may take those actions and document them in your paper. You might apply earned value analysis on a project underway to satisfy course objective number 5, for example.

Verbs like “establish,” “characterize,” and “explore” require that the student shows mastery of current thinking on the subject. This part of your paper may be taken from research, or interviews. You might explore an application of dashboards by interviewing a project manager and performing research on current thinking about dashboards, for example.

Therefore, your paper should include sections to address the following:

  1. Identify and describe an actual project that was successful in part because it used project metrics, what those metrics were, and why they were a contributing factor to success.
  2. Research and report on current thinking in both research and practice about effective management of time, cost, and scope with metrics.
  3. Research and report on current thinking in both research and practice about the key characteristics of properly defined metrics, and identify and describe an actual project to compare its use of metrics to your research to determine if the metrics were properly defined.
  4. Research and report on current thinking in both research and practice about KPIs.
  5. Show your application of value-based project management metrics on a project with which you are familiar and interpret the results of your application.
  6. Research and report on performance dashboards including designs, use, and limitations, and visual project management tools, including project performance dashboards.
  7. Create proper performance indicators for application in measurement-driven project management on a project with which you are familiar.

Since the key sections of your work correspond to individual module of the course, it is recommended that you progressively develop your project based on the weekly topics.

Paper Requirements:

  • Prepare a portfolio paper to address the eight-course objective. All eight course objectives must be addressed. The Course Objectives are:
    1. Demonstrate the need for project management metrics and benefits of metric-driven project management.

  • Any diagram, figure, or table should be included in an appendix, but clearly discussed in the text portion of the paper. Appendices should be included after the references.
  • Format your entire paper in accordance with the CSU-Global Guide to Writing and APA (Links to an external site.).

Your paper must be 10 pages long, not including the required title page and references page or any other supplemental pages such as appendices that you choose to include.

HR Issues Papers (50%)

You will research and prepare two papers covering any two of the articles from the textbook that you don’t write discussion items for. Each paper will be worth a maximum of 25 points. The text of each paper (excluding the cover and reference pages) must be a minimum of five full pages and no longer than six pages in length and must be single-spaced (not 1.15, which is the default setting for recent versions of Word) and printed using Times New Roman, size 12 font, with 1.25 inch margins on the side and 1 inch margins on the top and bottom (Office 2003 default in Margin settings in Page Layout).  Also, please do not use any space saving techniques such as adding extra space between paragraphs (the first sentence of each paragraph should be indented and the After setting in Paragraph should be set at ‘0 pt’), using bulleted or numbered items, using sub-titles or footnotes, including diagrams or tables, or including your name/paper title at the top of any of the5-6 pages.  You will not receive full credit for a review that has more than a few grammatical errors.  Your grade on a paper will be reduced if you do not follow these technical requirements.  In addition, you must attach a cover page that includes the issue you have chosen and a page of references at the end of your paper (the cover page and reference page do not count toward the 5-6 page requirement).  You must use at least four references for the paper in addition to the textbook article that is the basis for your paper and none of the four references should be other articles from the textbooks.  No more than one page of the paper can be based on the textbook article.

In each paper, you should include your summary and analysis of the topic and your opinions regarding how an employer and, in particular, the HR function of the employer, should address the issue.  Please see the note regarding plagiarism in the class policies section of this syllabus.  Your papers should be submitted to me as Word attachments to either a Blackboard or email message.  Information in the text of your papers must be properly cited using the method that is used in Are You a Leader or a Laggard in the textbook.  Do not include any footnotes at the bottom of any of the 5-6 pages of your paper.  In preparing the papers you should avoid using more than three direct quotes and no quote should be longer than two sentences.  Following are the deadlines for the submission of your papers.  You do not have to wait until the deadlines to submit your papers.
