HEALTH INFORMATION SYSTEMS ACQUISITION AND IMPLEMENTATION
Create a workflow diagram of clinical and non-clinical data within an inpatient electronic medical record system. Include the departments for which this data would be captured and stored. For instance, chest x-ray reports would be captured in radiology department. You need to have a minimum of at least 10 data points. Make sure to explain the role of all data points. It is important that your data flows throughout your workflow diagram. For instance, you would not want your first data point to be the chest x-ray/radiology, then the next data point to be admissions (admission data would need to come first). You can create your workflow diagram using any workflow tool such as Smart Draw and Microsoft Word. You can also use PowerPoint if you prefer.

Discussion
Sigmund Freud is often hailed as the father of psychoanalytical theory. His theory was the first to point to the influence of early childhood experiences. However, psychoanalytical theory has received a lot of criticism. Although theories are supposed to be objective and value-free, they are developed within a sociocultural and political context. For example, with historical perspective, it is possible to see that values within the Western Victorian era influenced Freud as he developed his theory. Another criticism is that many psychoanalytical concepts cannot be measured. For example, how do you measure the id, ego, and superego or the notion of unconscious conflicts? As a result, it is difficult to test the accuracy of these concepts using social science research methods.
It is important to critically evaluate theories for their practical use. For example, is it appropriate to use a theory when working with diverse populations or with populations different from those with whom the theory was normed (e.g., women, racial and ethnic minority groups, those who are economically disadvantaged)? Finally, are the assumptions of theories consistent with the values underlying the field? In this Discussion, you respond to some of these concerns.
To prepare, read the following from the Learning Resources:
- Auld, F., Hyman, M., & Rudzinski, D. (2005). How is therapy with women different? In Resolution and inner conflict: An introduction to psychoanalytic therapy (pp. 217–236). Washington DC: American Psychological Association.
- National Association of Social Workers. (2008). Code of ethics of the National Association of Social Workers. Retrieved from https://www.socialworkers.org/About/Ethics/Code-of-Ethics/Code-of-Ethics-English
Post:
- Summarize the assumptions of Freud’s psychoanalytical theory in 2 to 3 sentences.
- Explain whether you believe it is appropriate to apply psychoanalytic theory to women and individuals from racial and ethnic minority groups.
- Explain whether you believe psychoanalytic theory is consistent with social work values and social work ethics.

Discussions & Learning Activities
QUESTION 1: What does Strategic HR mean?
In Chapter 1, we talk about the role HR plays within today’s organizations. It’s logical is it not? Today, the most valuable asset a company can have is its employees! Years ago while pursuing our MBAs, we took courses in Inventory Management, Production, and Plant Operations. But then twenty years ago our economy was based upon manufacturing and a company’s production capacity and inventory were of prime importance. Today, we’re in the information age and employees, especially creative employees with innovative ideas and technological skills, are paramount.
Twenty years ago, an HRM was little more than an administrator, someone to process the application form and ensure the new employee’s beneficiary form was completed correctly. Today, HRM’s are strategic partners in every thriving business enterprise developing policies and programs to support the mission of the business enterprise. Be sure to read and understand the information presented in Table 2.1 on pages 3 and 4 of your text.
In your own words, discuss what it means to be a strategic business partner. Why is it important for the HR strategy to be aligned with the business strategy? What skills are important for HR managers to have to be able to effectively add strategic value to the organization?
Don’t forget to read over and then respond to a colleague’s ideas.
Be sure to include citations from at least two sources you used to develop your responses!
QUESTION 2: Thoughts about HR Functions in today’s world
The field of human resource management has changed significantly over the past several decades. Make note of the HR functions identified in the readings and reflect carefully on the responsibilities of today’s HRMs. From your reading, as well as your own observations and/or experience (if applicable), please describe how the human resource function has changed over the last decade or so. Do you anticipate any further changes to the human resource management role in the near or distant future? If so, please explain your rationale.
Once you’ve posted your thoughts, take the time to respond to a colleague’s ideas.
