Introduction

Term Paper

The purpose of the Term Paper is to analyze the student’s ability to articulate key course concepts in relation to a professional organization. Each student will write a position paper that takes a clear position on how the organization’s development of employees enhances or detracts from the competitive advantage of the organization.  The paper should include an analysis of the following:

• The Organization and its mission
• How the organization develops employees
• Link the development of employees to the accomplishment of organizational goals and the competitive advantage

Directions

The paper format will be:

1. 8–12 pages (not including the reference and title page)
2. Formatted in APA Style (all course assignments are in APA Style)
3. Include at least five (5) sources
4. Double-spaced

Apply the CRAAP test to your source. Evaluate your source’s overall strength based on the elements of the CRAAP test. Is this source appropriate to use in answering to your research question, why or why not? Explain one thing you have learned from the process of doing this CRAAP test. Provide a properly formatted APA reference to the web page at the end of your initial post.

Theresa and Mike want to create a merged company that is defined by a culture of integrity, thus aiding employees in making ethical decisions, such as in Joe’s ethical dilemma. They will begin by understanding the methods of embedding ethical decision making and behaviors into the culture, including their responsibilities as leaders. You, the consultant, are asked to provide recommendations and guidance to help them shape the culture they intend. This discussion is about values, a culture of integrity, and the role of leaders in creating and maintaining it.

Review the scenario for this course and discuss the following with your classmates.

• What ethical theories can be used to create a values-driven culture of integrity?
• What organizational programs or processes can help achieve a values-driven culture of integrity?
• In this type of culture, what decision-making processes can the CEOs use to make ethical decisions? Include any insights from your professional experience.

Warehousing and Material Handling

Based on the chapters reading and the attached articles, in a 3-5 page paper, explain the following:

• How do product characteristics influence packaging and materials handling considerations?
• What are some environmental disadvantages to plastic packaging?
• What environmentally friendly packaging strategies might a firm adopt?
• Discuss the advantages/disadvantages to public warehousing.
• Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of private warehousing?

The requirements below must be met for your paper to be accepted and graded:

• Write between 750 – 1,250 words (approximately 3 – 5 pages) using Microsoft Word in APA style, see example below.
• Use font size 12 and 1” margins.
• Include cover page and reference page.
• At least 80% of your paper must be original content/writing.
• No more than 20% of your content/information may come from references.
• Use at least three references from outside the course material, one reference must be from EBSCOhost. Text book, lectures, and other materials in the course may be used, but are not counted toward the three reference requirement.
• Cite all reference material (data, dates, graphs, quotes, paraphrased words, values, etc.) in the paper and list on a reference page in APA style.

References must come from sources such as, scholarly journals found in EBSCOhost, CNN, online newspapers such as, The Wall Street Journal, government websites, etc. Sources such as, Wikis, Yahoo Answers, eHow, blogs, etc. are not acceptable for academic writing. 

Purpose of Assignment

The purpose of this assignment is to provide students an opportunity to apply communication theories and research to actual business situations. The discussion with other learning team members is designed to identify and consider different perspectives. 

Assignment Steps

Read Case 2: Global Shared Services, McDonald’s Corporation, located in Mastering Leadership. 

Discuss in your learning team the communications and group behavioral issues that might arise in an organization that hires employees for their first job.

Note: Each team member must write at least two substantive responses (with a minimum 350 words each) and submit them via the Assignment Files tab.

Note: Grades are awarded based upon individual contributions to the Learning Team assignment. Each Learning Team member receives a grade based on his/her contributions. Not all students may receive the same grade for the team assignment.

In our Week 5 reading we are introduced to the many elements of budgeting.  Not all budgeting processes work well but the process, in general certainly has value.  You and Emma began discussing the role of accounting in performance management last week.  This week you are continuing your conversation and narrowing the focus to accounting and their role in the budgeting process.  This morning Emma asked you what you think the benefits of budgets are at CM Tech and how accounting can play a role in maximizing the benefits derived from an effective budget process.  

• In your initial discussion post share with your classmates what you feel are the most important benefits of an effective budgeting process and how the accounting department plays a role in making the budget process effective rather than destructive or inefficient.  In your responses to your peers expand on your agreement or disagreement with the most important reasons they have shared and suggest additional actions the accounting department can take to support the efforts.
• Support your initial post with at least one scholarly reference.    

Application: National, State, and Community Asset Mapping

It is essential to be aware of and develop relationships with crisis responding organizations and service agencies in your local area or community. National organizations partner with their local and state affiliates to provide direction and communication from outside the disaster area. When there is no national affiliate for a local organization, the national and state governments take on a greater role. Depending on the scope of a disaster, crisis response is not always a local endeavor. When a crisis affects communication, outside agencies become a vital link.

To prepare for this assignment:

• Review Chapters 4 and 5 in your course text, Crisis Management in the New Strategy Landscape, paying particular attention to how crisis planning relates to the management process and how crisis management teams can be used to identify assets of and threats facing an organization.
• Review the Appendix in your course text, Crisis Management in the New Strategy Landscape, focusing on the sample items that make up a crisis plan.
• Review the article, “Mapping the Assets of Your Community: A Key Component for Building Local Capacity” and the PowerPoint presentation, “Uncovering Local Assets: The Foundation for Building Stronger Communities.” Examine each type of potential community asset described and ways to uncover and map these assets.
• Review the article, “Five Years after Katrina: Progress Report on Recovery, Rebuilding and Renewal,” to examine a crisis response for a state and region.
• Review the article, “Integrating Emergency and Disaster Planning.” Think about how the disaster preparation proposed could be applied or adapted to your state.
• Then develop an asset map for your state and think about how and when you would use those responders, agencies, etc.
• Think about how the organization you currently work for or one with which you are familiar would collaborate with crisis-responding organizations in your state.

The assignment: (3–6 pages)

• Develop a state asset map for your location (or country if you live outside the U.S.).
• Analyze the importance of collaboration in crisis management and response, specific to the organizations in your asset map.
• Explain how the organization you currently work for (or one with which you are familiar) would collaborate with each of the organizations from this week’s Discussion.
• Provide specific examples to illustrate your points.

Support your Application Assignment with specific references to all resources used in its preparation. You are required to provide a reference list and to appropriately cite, APA style, all references used within your assignment.
