Consulting Project

This assignment is worth 20% of your grade. Your consulting report should be original work;If you have any questions about this assignment, please post them in the Ask the Professor discussion forum so that everyone can benefit from the answers.  This assignment addresses Course Objectives 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.

This assignment has been adapted from the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), Managing Virtual Work Teams – A SHRM case study by Frankie S. Jones, PhD.

For this assignment there are three parts.

· Part I: An Introduction to Virtual Teams

· Part II: Building a Virtual Team

· Part III: Managing Conflict Virtually

Directions: you will review, discuss, and address questions in each of these parts in order to arrive at your collective responses.

After reviewing all three parts associated with this case, you will prepare a 4-7 page paper that addresses the questions in each of the three parts.  This paper will serve as your voice to coach Lauren on how to lead her cross-functional team to success and overcome the issues presented in the case study..  Your paper should include a minimum of 8 references from sources published within the last ten years.

Part I: An Introduction to Virtual Teams

Lauren is assigned team leader of a cross-functional team for a very important project to the company.  Lauren reviews the profiles of the six team members her boss gave her.  She is both intrigued and anxious when she sees that team members are geographically dispersed.

Lauren works in the Atlanta office.  One team member is in India; another is in Germany; and the rest live in the United States, but in different time zones.  Two staff members are in the eastern time zone (Virginia and North Carolina) and two staff members are in the central time zone (Texas and Louisiana).

Lauren has never managed a virtual team and is unsure what special skills it will take to be successful.  She begins to wonder what competencies are necessary for virtual team leaders and members.  She studies the team member profiles and creates a matrix to evaluate each member’s strengths and weaknesses from the perspective of working virtually.  She includes herself because she realizes she needs to evaluate her own strengths and weaknesses.  Lauren thinks about the challenges and opportunities she will face managing this virtual team.

In your assigned groups, you are to:

· Analyze the supplied team member matrix.

· Identify challenges and opportunities Lauren’s team might face.

· Brainstorm ways to capitalize on opportunities and address challenges.

· Record your ideas in the group discussion forum.

Part II: Building a Virtual Team

Lauren has evaluated the challenges and opportunities that could arise as she manages her virtual team.  To mitigate challenges and take advantage of opportunities, she decides to conduct a kick-off meeting next week.  She wants to set the ground rules for how her team will operate and present them at the kick-off meeting.  What topics should Lauren’s agenda include?  Which ground rules should she mandate and which should she negotiate?  How will she build relationships and trust during this initial meeting?

In your assigned groups, you are to:

· Create an agenda for Lauren’s kick-off meeting.

· Explain why you chose each agenda topic.

· Describe what technology Lauren might use to conduct the kick-off meeting.

· Identify ground rules for the team, and propose which ground rules Lauren should mandate and which ones she should negotiate.

· Recommend ways that Lauren could build relationships and trust during this initial meeting.

· Record your responses in the group discussion forum.

Part III: Managing Conflict Virtually

Even though your team presented Lauren with an agenda for the kickoff meeting, along with ground rules, she used the agenda below for the kick-off meeting.

She set expectations for status reporting, the technologies to be used, and performance management.  The types of communication the team agreed on included e-mail, instant messaging, and web conferencing.  The team also agreed to use Microsoft SharePoint to report project status and to create a virtual community for team members to build relationships and trust.  Lauren asked all team members to upload their pictures and their résumés to jump-start the community.

Lauren’s Agenda:

· Getting-to-Know-You Activity

· Team Goals and Objectives

· Technologies We Will Use (open discussion)

· Virtual Community (pictures and bios)

· Status Reporting

· Team Meetings

· One-on-one meetings

Despite setting ground rules, the following conflicts arose within Lauren’s team:

· Lags in e-mail responses generated mistrust between two team members.

· One team member complained that the other team members tried to use instant messaging to solve complex problems and resolutions are never reached.

· There has been an uneven exchange of project knowledge.

In your assigned groups, you are to:

· Recommend actions Lauren should take now to resolve each of these conflicts.

· Discuss what Lauren could have done to prevent the conflicts from occurring in the first place.

· Recommend actions Lauren can take to minimize team conflict in the future.

· Record your responses in the group discussion forum.

Assignment 03: System Solutions

HA3220D – Health Information Systems

Assignment 03: System Solutions

Liverty Hospital is ready to move forward with implementing a new EHR system. In Discussion 2.3, you and your team evaluated three different products:

.Waiting Room Solutions

.Practice Fusion EHR

.AllScripts MyWay EHR

Since your evaluation, you have learned that one of the main issues encountered at the hospital is the accessibility of patient information in its specialty clinics, as well as the technical skill level of the clinical staff. So you decide to evaluate one additional product: Waiting Room Solutions Specialty Packs. Look for specialties like allergy & immunology, audiology, bariatric surgery, etc. If you scroll down, you will find different videos within each specialty.

Based on this new information, and the evaluation you have already completed, make a recommendation of which EHR Liverty should choose. Summarize your recommendation in a 2-page double-spaced paper in APA style. In your recommendation,

.briefly describe the features of this product that differentiate it from others you have evaluated.

.incorporate the product evaluation you did in the Week 2 VoiceThread.

.discuss specific system functions and how they will meet your organization’s needs and requirements.

Incorporate the product evaluation you did in the Week 2 VoiceThread. Discuss specific system functions and how they meet your organization’s needs and requirements.

Relationship Between Patient Care and Ability to Pay

Topic: Relationship Between Patient Care and Ability to Pay.

The first requirement of the Research Capstone project is to select a Health Care Management topic. Topics must be comprehensive in nature and should cover all the program objectives for the Health Care Management Program. In addition, the topic you select should be a current (within 3 years) health care issue and should be relevant to the Health Care Management program. Ensure that whatever health care management topic you choose there is a sufficient amount of scholarly references to support your research efforts. Contact your instructor for additional guidance in the selection of your research topic.

This unit’s Supplemental Resources includes some health care management “Hot topics for 2013” that can serve as a starting point for your topic identification.

Instructions

  • Select a Health Care Research Capstone topic and develop a plan on how all program objectives will be incorporated into the project materials.
  • Research Capstone Topic and plan will need to be submitted and approved by your instructor by the end of unit 1.

Conduct a Needs Assessment for Selected Business/Organization

The Critical Thinking assignments in this course build upon each other to help you complete the final Portfolio Project, an instructional design blueprint for a business or organization. In this step, you will complete a needs assessment for the business or organization you have selected and profiled.

Your needs assessment must include data collection measures and outcomes for the following four stages:

  • Stage 1: What are the business/organization needs?
    • Measure: (What measure is used?)
    • Outcome: (What is the forecasted ROI?)
  • Stage 2: What are the performance needs?
    • Measure: (What measure is used?)
    • Outcome: (What are the knowledge and skills needed for success in the business/organization? To what degree are they currently being met?)
  • Stage 3: What are the learning needs?
    • Measure: (What measure is used?)
    • Outcome: (What knowledge and skills need to be improved through instruction?)
  • Stage 4: What are the learner needs?
    • Measure: (What measure is used?)
    • Outcome: (For example: Who are the learners? How many are there? Is the group multi-generational? What is the cultural make-up? Are they traditional or nontraditional learners?)

Continue using the template that you began in Module 2 to organize your findings. Your final product should be well written and conform with the CSU Global Writing Center (Links to an external site.). Use at least two to three sources to support your observations and analysis. The CSU Global Library is a great place to find these sources. Submit your completed template for grading.

MODULE 2 SLP

See attached assignment instructions. Should include a 3- page paper and a BARS instrument with five different areas of assessment.

Sowards (Appellee) v. Norbar, Inc. (Appellant)

Issue:

Appellee was terminated for missing stops on 2 separate days that Appellant stated Appellee was aware of and this was considered to be a refusal to do the job, which Appellant alleges is grounds for immediate termination.

Appellant searched a motel room that the Appellee stayed at, but was rented by the Appellant, for a missing permit book.

Rule:               Breach of Contract

Invasion of Privacy

Analysis:         Appellee contends that the additional stops were not communicated to him. With no proof of receipt, it cannot be proven that the stops were communicated to Appellee by Appellant. Also, without proof that the stops were communicated, it cannot be shown that Appellee refused to do the job, which, based on the employee handbook, does not warrant immediate termination, and the Appellee should have received a written warning.

Appellee contends that the Appellant searched the motel room for a missing permit book that the Appellee uses while on the job and has a key to. Appellant keeps the room on retainer and contends that since they are paying for the room, they have the right to enter the room without permission from Appellee.

Conclusion:    From the analysis of this case, Appellant did breach the contract as well as invaded the privacy of the Appellee.

An effective employee handbook reduces litigation costs within an organization in many ways. As Deschenaux explains, “Providing workers with a handbook will foster better employer-employee relations and inform employees of what is expected of them. Moreover, a handbook will help companies avoid legal claims down the road and help them defend against such claims if they arise” (2013).  By making sure that the policies can be easily accessed by the employees, and that they received the policies, the company is better protected against future litigation.

It is very important for the HRM professional to understand the mission and function of an organization, as it is necessary to have this information to align HR goals with the organization’s mission and function. Without this information, policies that are needed may not be created or may be incorrectly handled within the departments.

The employee handbook should be updated when policies change or laws are updated, added, or changed. Any time there is a change to a policy or law, the handbook needs to reflect that change so the employee has the correct and updated information. If the employee does not have the correct information, they cannot be held accountable for not following the current policy or law, and this can cause issues within the company.

When creating a handbook, HR, Senior Management, and Attorneys need to be involved. Any law or policy that requires mass distribution, benefits the employee may be eligible for, and disciplinary action process need to be contained within the handbook. Because this is being given to the employees, it should be written in language that is easy for the employee to understand and it should avoid overreaching language.
