Scope Management and Health Checks

Your brother in-law is about to submit a scope statement to the town council for the July 4thparade and picnic he has volunteered to project manage. Your town has about 6,000 households, and this is the first time the town council gave a tentative approval for the parade and picnic. The council president thinks that about $1,500 can be allocated for the event. Since your brother in-law knows you are taking a project management class, he has asked that you to look over his draft scope statement. He knows that the scope statement should be professional so that the town council will see him as responsible and allocate the money for the parade and picnic. Here is his scope statement.

View this Ethical Dilemma to learn more about Bill and Joe’s relationship.

Joe has scheduled a meeting with his management team for next week to talk about the Peninsula Hotel chain contract. He hopes that he will be able to work with them to draft a contract favorable to Peninsula that will ensure its renewal for another year. He is reasonably sure that the contract renewal will ensure his continued success and employment with UWEAR. Bill invites Joe and his family to join them on his yacht for the weekend.

Joe is relieved to get the invitation from Bill because their relationship has been strained lately due to the contract negotiations.

Joe must decide how he will answer Bill’s invitation to join him and his family on their yacht.

Using ethical principles that you have learned thus far to justify your answers, please respond to the following questions in a paper of 500–700 words:

  • What are some reasons why Joe should turn down the invitation?
  • What are some reasons why Joe could accept the invitation?
  • Does Joe’s relationship with Bill meet the definition of a conflict of interest?

Compensation

Write a page answering the two questions in APA format including intext citation.

1. Compensation is a detailed concept, and many employers and employees view it’s components differently.

· Explain how perceptions of compensation differ among the various disciplinary concepts.

· Select at least three of those concepts and discuss how these concepts are evident in the compensation platform at your current or former employer (or another company you have researched).

2. Compensation discrimination can be costly to organizations and as such, companies must work hard to ensure that their compensation practices are in alignment with legislation.

· Locate an example of a company that has violated one of the compensation laws that was discussed in this module. Describe the violation and its outcome (so it is important that you do not select cases that that still pending).

· Discuss how the company can avoid similar violations in the future.

Discussion

The center point of research studies is the body of data collected to answer the research question. These data must be measured, which is the act of taking an abstract concept (e.g., depression, anger, etc.), sorting them out and quantifying them in some cohesive way in order to construct meaning—but how can you measure something that is not easily quantifiable?

Choosing an appropriate measurement tool requires consideration of a number of different issues including reliability, validity, appropriateness for use with a specific group or culture, availability, and potential cost. Sometimes, social workers will attempt to create their own set of questions to tap into or measure a concept. This may appear to be an easy thing to do; however, writing questions to measure a phenomenon is more challenging than it would seem. For example, how do we know it measures what we want it to measure?  In the first discussion this week, you will have the opportunity to create your own questions to measure a phenomenon of your interest. In the second discussion, you will compare the measure you created with an existing instrument that measures the same phenomenon.

To prepare: Choose one phenomenon or issue that a client may be dealing with (for example, depression, anxiety, or family conflict). Consider how you would evaluate the client’s progress in this area. Create questions with response options that would capture this phenomenon or client issue.

  • Identify the phenomenon you would measure and explain how you conceptualize this phenomenon.
  • Provide at least 3 questions you would use to measure this phenomenon and explain how these questions operationalize the phenomenon.
  • Define reliability in 2-3 sentences and give one example of how you would establish reliability for the questions you created.
  • Define validity in 2-3 sentences and give one example of how you would establish validity for the questions you created.
  • Create a measurement plan to assess the phenomenon.
    • Describe the methodology you would use to collect data using your measurement tool (your method for acquiring this research data).
    • Explain the advantages and disadvantages of your choices.

Being the leader

Primary Task Response: Within the Discussion Board area, write 400–600 words that respond to the following questions with your ideas, analysis, and comments supported with application of course learning materials. Be substantive and clear, and use examples to reinforce your ideas.

Review the UWEAR and PALEDENIM scenario found here.

You will first meet with the CEOs of each organization, Theresa Tramlin and Mike Miller, to help them understand their important leadership roles for the success of the merger.

The merger is a significant change for both organizations; there is growing anxiety and uncertainty among the employees of both organizations. The goal is to complete the merger in a way that maintains employee performance and allegiance to the merged organization. Both CEOs were promoted from managerial positions, so one of your tasks is to help them understand how to distinguish the two roles.

Please discuss the following with your classmates:

  • In your opinion, what is the difference between being a manager and being a leader?
  • Read research findings by Kabacoff (1998) that, although men and women are perceived as equally effective in leading, women tend to focus more on production, attaining results, and people, while men tend to focus on strategic planning, organization vision, and business tasks.
  • Considering this, in your opinion, which leadership theory or style will be effective when leading the merger and why?
