Compensation Strategy

Select an organization with which you are familiar and describe the type of compensation strategy it uses.

Guided Response:

Be sure your response is between 200-300 words and includes at least two scholarly references, one of which should be our course text.  Respond to at least two classmates’ posts.

DISCUSSION 2

Overview of Compensation & Benefits

Compare and contrast compensation and benefits strategy of the “people department” of Southwest Airlines to overall strategies of two other airlines.  What distinguishes each approach from the others?  What are the strengths and weaknesses of each?

crisis management

When most people think about identifying a crisis or disaster, the first ones that come to mind are usually natural disasters like tsunamis, earthquakes, or draughts. Others may first think of wars, terrorism, or genocide. As counselor educators, you should be aware of all types of crisis that may occur, including business crises such as those that involve the global outsourcing of jobs or de-centralization of business functions. Political, personal, financial, or technological crises also are important categories to consider. For this Discussion, however, the focus is on the first types of crises mentioned—natural disasters and terrorist events.

Regardless of the type of crisis/disaster, the duration and intensity—or scope—of a crisis directs how your organization, community, or region will be impacted and the extent of the disaster response. The scope of a disaster also dictates whether an area is declared a disaster area by a nation’s leaders, whether assistance from outside your area will be needed, and the length of time necessary for disaster recovery efforts.

Another area counselor educators should investigate relates to the demographics of the crisis/disaster population. Knowing this information will inform you and first responders of cultural considerations involved. The U.S. Census Bureau Quick Facts provides age, gender, ethnicity, home ownership, language, median income, and education level for your state, county, and city. This demographic data may be explored online.

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Review Chapter 2 in your course text, Crisis Management in the New Strategy Landscape, focusing on the types of crisis trends presented.
  • Review the article, “Crisis in Context Theory: An Ecological Model,” and consider the proposed model for understanding the impact of crises.
  • Review the articles, “Latina Mothers’ Perceptions of Mental Health and Mental Health Promotion” and “Risk of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Depression in Survivors of the Floods in Bahir, India” to help you understand multicultural considerations related to crisis responding.
  • Review the articles, “Disaster Response: Mental Health Effects among WTC Rescue and Recovery Workers” and “Rescuing the Rescuers: First Responders at Risk,” for examples of health provider responses.
  • Review Chapter 3 of the video, The Soldier’s Heart, and consider the impact of combat on those in the military.
  • Review the articles, “The Hierarchy of Needs and Care Planning in Addiction Services: What Maslow Can Tell Us about Addressing Competing Priorities?” and “Basic Need Status and Health-Promoting Self-Care Behavior in Adults.” Think about how basic need satisfaction is correlated to health-promoting, self-care behavior and how this relates to crisis management and response.
  • Choose a natural disaster or terrorist activity that would affect your community to use for this assignment. Think about the ways in which it would affect your community. Please choose an event other than Hurricane Katrina.
  • Review demographics online at the U.S. Census Bureau Quick Facts website to determine the characteristics of those who might be affected by this particular event. If you live outside the U.S., research your location.
  • You should obtain data such as age, gender, ethnicity, home ownership, language, median income, and education level for your state, county, and city.

Traditionally, the activities of labor unions have supported the development of gains for the American worker. As labor unions negotiate with management, those gains set a standard for other non-union organizations. The U.S. has enacted a number of laws that protect workers such as the Civil Rights Act, Equal Pay Act, Occupational Safety and Health Act, Americans with Disabilities Act, and the Family and Medical Leave Act. In this assignment, you will explore some of the major US labor laws.

Prepare an 800 word paper that addresses following:

  • What is a yellow dog contract as described in the Norris-LaGuardia Act of 1932?
  • What was the purpose of the Wagner act of 1935?
  • Compared to the Norris-LaGuardia Act of 1932 and the Wagner Act of 1935, what impact did the Taft-Hartley Act of 1947 have on labor unions?
  • Do employment laws replace the need for labor unions? Are these acts still relevant in today’s business environment? Why or why not?

Assignment 3- 8110

Submit: Annotated Bibliography

This week culminates in your submission of an annotated bibliography that should consist of an introduction, followed by two quantitative article annotations, two qualitative article annotations, and two mixed methods article annotations for a total of six annotations, followed by a conclusion.

An annotated bibliography is a document containing selected sources accompanied by a respective annotation. Each annotation consists of a summary, analysis, and application for the purpose of conveying the relevance and value of the selected source. As such, annotations demonstrate a writer’s critical thinking about and authority on the topic represented in the sources.

In preparation for your own future research, an annotated bibliography provides a background for understanding a portion of the existing literature on a particular topic. It is also a useful precursor for gathering sources in preparation for writing a subsequent literature review.

Please review the assignment instructions below and click on the underlined words for information about how to craft each component of an annotation.

Please use the document “Annotated Bibliography Template with Example” for additional guidance.

It is recommended that you use the grading rubric as a self-evaluation tool before submitting your assignment.

  • Before you read the full article and begin your annotation, locate the methodology section in the article to be sure that it describes the appropriate research design.
    • For quantitative research articles, confirm that a quantitative research design, such as a quasi-experimental, casual comparative, correlational, pretest–posttest, or true experimental, was used in the study.
    • For qualitative research articles, confirm that a qualitative research design or approach, such as narrative, ethnographic, grounded theory, case study, or phenomenology, was used in the study.
    • For mixed methods research articles, confirm that a mixed methods research (MMR) design was used in the study. There are several design classifications in MMR; some examples of MMR types or families of design are parallel, concurrent, sequential, multilevel, or fully integrated mixed methods design.
  • Prepare an annotated bibliography that includes the following:
    • A one-paragraph introduction that provides context for why you selected the six research articles you did: two quantitative, two qualitative, and two MMR.
    • A reference list entry in APA Style for each of the six articles that follows proper formatting. Follow each reference list entry with a three-paragraph annotation that includes:
    • A one-paragraph conclusion that presents a synthesis of the six articles.
  • Format your annotated bibliography in Times New Roman, 12-point font, double-spaced. A separate References list page is not needed for this assignment.
  • Submit your Annotated Bibliography.

Ethics Interview Paper

Interview Paper

Each student will interview a work colleague, superior, friend or acquaintance about ethics in the workplace.  Alternatively, the student may describe a situation that they experienced.  The interview subject will tell the student about an ethical issue the subject confronted on the job.  The student should briefly (1 paragraph) describe the situation.  The student should also describe the alternative solutions the subject considered, as well as the action they actually took (including taking no action) and why.  Finally, the student should submit his or her own analysis of the situation and should argue for a particular outcome, using either Utilitarianism or Kantian Ethics.  There is a description of what is expected of the ethical analysis attached to this syllabus.  Each student will submit a written report (2 – 5 pages).  The subject may remain anonymous, as may the company the subject works for.  However, the student should describe the general industry (oil field services, a bar, a restaurant, a health care clinic etc.) and the subject’s relative position in the company (a first-level employee, a manager, middle-management, executive etc.).  Any information that is provided from a source other than the interviewee needs to be properly referenced.  If a paper needs citations that have not been provided, the paper will lose 5 points from the grade and will have to be corrected and re-submitted to the instructor.  The paper will be submitted for grading via Blackboard (assignments section) by Friday July 31, 2020 at 11:55 pm.

Paper Guidelines

Guidelines for what is expected in a Kantian or Utilitarian Analysis are attached to this syllabus.  A Utilitarian Analysis without a spreadsheet (or a Word table, does not have to be Excel) or a Kantian Analysis without a consideration of Universalizability and Reversibility will lose points.
